i got s1 a week after it came out. but i wasn't aware of its online capabilities. the offline version was simply amazing at the time. and it's still a nice game to play on a rainy day. i eventually played s2 online over a friends house, and that lead to the whole online enjoyment. i've played s1 online, and i thought it was a little rough, but enjoyable. s2 was packed with some amazingly fun maps that i couldn't get enough of. and than s3 came out, and the online maps were in my opinion, lame. but i've adjusted to them, and learned to love them.

overall, i say the offline version of s1 is more enjoyable than any of the online versions. but only for a certain amount of time, after playing the story mode for so long, you strive for the feeling of online competition

Since you bring up the topic of single player, S3 single player was a joke. It was extremely easy and and lacked an interesting storyline. Thats another reason I liked S2 so much because I thought it had the most challenging single player. It made you be stealthy and use different tactics to gain intel and such. S3 you can pretty much run'n'gun through almost all the maps(w/ a few exceptions) with impunity.
