MORE NEWS ON THE PS3's (frames per second)

PlayStation 3 New Article

"Today, I would like to tell stories that might sound like a dream," Kutaragi declared at the beginning of his keynote speech. The CEO of Sony computer Entertainment revealed his company's plans for the future of entertainment possibilities arriving with the CELL processor and it's evolution with time. Finally Cell proccessor's power inside the PS3 in spring '06.

120 frames per second entertainment on PlayStation 3

After wowing the audience with the stunning introduction of next-gen PS3 game videos, Kutaragi went on to detail the story of modern television sets and their restrictions. According to him, present technology allows TV's to run at only 50-60 fields per second and PC monitors that display around 60-90 frames per second(fps). He expects PS3 to be able to run at a frame rate significantly higher at almost 120 fps, making it display twice the frames of conventional TV's.

Although the human eye cannot distinguish between frame rates above 30 fps, smoother gameplay exists above this frame rate, with 60 FPS being a minimum standard for most First Person shooters. Kutaragi believes that with such frame rates and peripherals like a HD camera (or the next-gen EyeToy technology) could produce some interesting gameplay scenarios for PS3 gamers.

Kutaragi went on to share his vision of such gameplay by relating it with a scene from the movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The lips of the main character were read by the computer. He explained that a similar recognition system can be achieved through the combined power of the Cell Microprocessor and Sony's EyeToy.

To make that possible, the electronic industry has to catch up with Kutaragi's ambitions. " I earnestly hope to see the home electronics industry strive hard so consumers can enjoy such an environment at home before long," said Kutaragi.

High Definition and Cell Roadmap

Aside from new gaming innovations, Kutaragi also talked about the future of HDTV's with Cell processor inside. He added that the Cell chip would permit HDTV's to reach a level never achieved before, like high-defintion video conferencing, displaying a newspaper in its actual size or playing tens of HD channels from multiple sources at the very same time. Image manipulation such as enlarging or rotating with these HD signals is also possible in realtime with the power of Cell, added Kutaragi.

Speaking about the evolution of the Cell processor, Kutaragi stated that the chip will see a decrease in size as time progresses. Sony's recent state of the art factories were created specifically for the Cell microprocessor production. Which can output different configurations of the Cell chip. Current 90 nanometer process will be shrunken down to 65 nanometer and finally down to 45 nanometer process making it the 'Micro Cell'.

We can think of a great implementation of a future Micro Cell. Such as the next-generation PSP from Sony (maybe) in 2009-10, given Sony's usual 5-6 year console track with the PlayStations. The possibilities are endless!

Damn nice compilation and such. But it would probably be better suited in a different forum.

Sadly enough, I have no idea what you are talking about. I don't know what any of that means. I still think PS3 is the better console.

I have a similar predicament, I understood 10 percent of it. As long as the numbers are higher on ps3 than on xbox 360, I'm happy.

Oh GOD I would love to see you banned. All of your posts are idiotic spam. If you do indeed preffer the 360, can you at least tell us why instead of sounding like a flaming douche?

Okay, besides the PS3 and XBOX 360 Specs.

Did any of you take a look at Blu-Ray & HD DVD Disks? These play a big role with which console is better. Blu-Ray is for the PS3 and it has more space and better performance than HD DVD for XBOX 360. Thats a big plus for the PS3 because their games have more space for details etc.

I'm in the same boat as Nirvana and Red. I don't understand much of that.

However, I would rather have the PS3 because it's backwards-compatable and I don't see any reason to switch consoles.

PS3 > XBOX 360

My reasoning is simple. Blu-ray discs hold almost two times as much as the dual layer DVDs. Plus, the PS3 has better hardware. The video card, ram, and performance is better. PS3 also uses bluetooth wireless, which is alot better than the 2.4GHz that Xbox has. Even though the PS3 will most likely be $100 or so more than the 360, it will probably be well worth it.

I personally know one person who is going to get the Xbox 360 on release. One person. I know about 40-50 people who can't wait for the PS3. Xbox 360 just isnt going to be a hit in my area.

As with most people I don't know much about those specs or what they mean. So if someone could say which is faster with the above specs.

Okay, I tried my best to dumb it down for some of you here... I don't really know too much about anything in particular... but I know enough about the basics (or so I think)...
I implore you to correct me if I'm inaccurate in any of my descriptions or if I'm not as descriptive as you think it should be.

When looking and comparing the measurements of any of this stuff, just keep in mind "the bigger it is the better and faster it usually is".

Processor: (aka CPU) The brain of the computer system. Usually measured in either gigahurtz (GHz) or megahurtz (MHz).

Memory: The storage area of the computer. Where stuff is stored for the processor to interpret. This is usually measured in megabytes (MB).

GPU: GPU is kinda like the CPU... Except the "G" stands for graphics. This is the video card of the machine. Measured in megahurtz (MHz). Without this, the CPU would be under quite a lot of strain to interpret heavy graphic oriented material (like a game). NVIDIA and ATi are both leading manufacturers in the videocard industry. (I personally prefer NVIDIA)

Best Display:
The display options for the system. (Seems self-evident to me, but I don't know how to explain it...)

Network:
What connects the machine to the internet. Wi-Fi means wireless networking. b/g is basically the "version" of networking... b is the standard... g is the better than standard (newer and faster rates for NETWORKING). Regardless if your network is b or g, you should still have the same internet speed so neither matter and both are compatable with whatever high speed internet router you choose.

Audio: The audio options for the system. 5.1 is surround sound (Two speakers in front of you to the right and left, two in the back of you right and left and one center speaker right in front of you = 5. The .1 is for a subwoofer.) (There are better audio setups out there these days [like 7.1+]) but 5.1 is still the most common used.)

Wireless Input: This has to do with how you can plug stuff into the system, without actually "plugging" anything... (thus wireless!). This allows you to have cordless equipment (such as your controller). Bluetooth is basically a short range radio technology. RF is a standard radio frequency (I'm not positive but I think this means it is pretty much remote-control/infrared type technology...)

Storage: The hard drive in the system. This is measured in gigabytes (GB). This is the part of the machine that stores, reads and even writes data on your system.

Dimensions: The physical size of the system.

PS3 is definately worth the wait in my worthless opinion.
