Istar means wizard. He was killed by the Balrog, but the Valar retured him ina new body with greater power because he was the only one left.

You should be satisfied with that.

As for the Valar, they are the Powers of Arda. One might call them Gods, but they are just creations of the thought of the one God, Eru Illuvitar. They are the Ainur and Valinor is their land. They shaped Middle-earth in the depths of time and they created the Sun and the Moon and Manwe is their King. It was the Valar who overthrew Melkor the Morgoth at the end of the First Age.

Not too much of a fan. The battle scenes were nice, but like BigRed I prefer SciFi. Dorks :P
