New ID 11: Hurricanes/New Orleans
Due to the failure of the most recent ID, I remade ID 11. I take this topic from the suggestion box:

Don't say that this has already been discussed because i am sure it has not.
My view is that the planners of the levies are at serious fault for not constructing them to withstand 5 winds. The were built with a max of 3 in mind, which is idiotic due to the fact that a 5 was sure to strike sooner or later. Levies across the gulf coast MUST be reinforced and we MUST create a plan for situations like this in the future. We cannot continue without a concrete plan on how to organize resources and rescue efforts to avoid the debacle we had with mismanagement and ignorance. As for New Orleans itself, it must rebuild and restore, but with the possibility of another big storm in mind.

Reinforce levies for up to category 5 hurricanes.
Move the national guard nearby ASAP.
Mobilize everything possible for highest categories.
Don't wait a week to help.
President should stop hating black people

To help:
All the pro sports leagues need to hold an all star game, in which all proceeds go to hurricane relief
To prevent:
People need to leave when the hurricane is announced
Better levy's

to help the victims now? do what i did and take toys, lots and lots of toys to the various shelters. happy children are quiet children and i'm pretty sure some of these folks could use a few moments of quiet time right about now while they deal with fema or whoever. also donate 25-50$ to the red cross for water, food, clothes. whatever.
for the future, when a MANDATORY evacuation is implemented the mayor AND the governor both should see to it that it's carried out.
as for the rebuilding of new orleans, i think we should bulldoze every last inch of it into a nice rubble laden bedrock foundation, bring in a few million tons of gravel, rock, and other suitable material and rebuild it, but this time let's do it on a higher foundation so the next flood won't be so bad.

Im sorry but I need to bash Bush on this subject if anyone wants to argue feel free (Aol:Escape from nj) But Bush should have got rescue helicopters, planes, or anything else to ship all of the homeless people out of NO why? Becasue they are homeless now we are sending toys, money, and many other things to people in NO becasue our president did not take action when he should have. I would like to know your opinion on Bush do you take my side? or are you a Republican and stick by your president.

I'm with you there. Scientists KNEW this was going to happen sooner or later and have been warning the gov't. At the first hint that kat would be a 4 or 5, they should have had EVERY possible resource getting people out and every possible resource ready to go in and help. The gov't should have had a plan ready long before this storm appeared but their ignorance cost the lives of thousands.

In this particular situation, I think its really hard to put the blame on Bush. It really is the mayor of New Orleans and the state government of Louisiana's fault. They refused help and logistical support from the federal government until the feds finally forced them to accept aid. It is not the federal government's jurisdiction to help in events of natural disaster. It's the state government's thang. I think Bush did what he could.
I do, however, feel that the response was somewhat askew from what it would have been if the hurricane had hit an area such as Beverly Hills, or another upper-class neighborhood. I think that foremost the levies would have been built much stronger, and that the response effort would have been better. Basically, I think that some of the crappy response was the result of the hardest hit areas being lower class. However, I strongly disagree with Jesse Jackson when he says it was a racial matter.

My opinion is that FEMA failed miserably. Everyone was wondering where FEMA was after Katrina. The former director of FEMA (Michael Brown) is probably the most responsible for the incredibly slow response. He is probably one of the least qualified people for the job. He never had any previous experiances with emergancies. Here is an article on his resume-
http://www.time.com/time/nation/arti...103003,00.html
Heres another article on "Why FEMA failed"-
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.p...&articleId=917
I am shocked that someone without the proper credentials could be appointed to head FEMA. This is what I think the biggest failure of the whole Katrina disaster is.
Also, I don't think that many people took the category 5 hurricane deal seriously.... Hmmm.. lets see... A category 5 hurricane and a city that is below sea level... To me, that means something. That means get the hell out. I don't know if people are just stupid or what, but appearantly the government and residents of New Orleans and the surrounding area had to learn the hard way what category 5 means.

The levies for New Orleans were practically made of sand and sandbags.
And if I lived there and knew a hurricane was coming, I would've walked my *** away from it, and tried to hitchhike along the way. There's always someone nice enough to help others around them, you just have to be nice to them too. I mean, it's not like people are gonna be like "my **** has a more important place in this car than you, human!"
