IMO
Green Day lost punk status upon signing with a major record label and began releasing singles and making videos for MTV.

At that point they had crossed into the "alternative" genre. Which is another word for "crap" that has no true organization. At least Nirvana was thrown into the "Grunge" category. But this "alternative" crap, there's just no rhyme or reason.

Then again, it's just an opinion....

For you guys that think that Green day is punk.
Modern Day Punk- GutterMouth
Old School Punk- Charged G.B.H

Now compare that to American Idiot or any other Green Day song. Post your results.

Yes, Angus, Green Day is PUNK.

Just to see what genre they were out under for large music companies, I threw a CD of theirs into my iPod, and it was classified as Punk / Alternative. I consider Alternative the same thing as punk, because it basically is.

Old school punk (Ramones, Sex Pistols, Misfits) is different from modern punk, such as Green Day, MCR, Fallout Boy, all that other crap.

Iknow you didnot just classify Fallout Boy as Punk....yes Old School Punk does include Misfits, Sex Pistols, and Ramones but you left out The Adicts they are the longest standing Punk band with the original line up and you forgot Henry Rollins. But Modern Day Punk that is good is hard to find some "new" punk is considerd (sp?) as Green Day and Fallout Boy and My Chemical Romance but Scuba GD, FB, and MCR have no reason in there lyrics and they are all on MTV no one who is considered Punk is on MTV. Mr.Rob put up a great point and I totally agree but Scuba please don't talk about my music when you dont know wnaything about it and if you have any type of music sharing files such as Bearshare, Limewire, Kazza Lite whatever download a few songs from Leftover Crack or Choking Victim they are the defintion of punk music. Oh and don't listen to your Ipod on music genres they know ****,

Considering I spent the vast majority of my teenage years stuck in a "Punky Haze," I'm going to have to argue on this one.

But then again, half the crap I would throw into "Alternative" would be considered "Hard Rock" or some other crap to a bunch of other people. So it all is probably based on a manner of opinion. But I can't stand idle and let great bands be thrown into the same category that contains such chumps like Everclear. Punk has been taking a horrid beating and had poor representation (or MISrepresentation) for a decade or two. It's just a shame that such a large % of the more talented punk bands will either a)never be heard from or b)be classified along with Everclear.

I realize I provide no "proof" or any type of backbone to my statement, other than opinion. But neither did you, so why should I feel obligated?
