Good to see I'm not alone here
Regardless....90s rock was like any other era and had its own highs and lows (except this decade, don't count on anything memorable out of these times)....Of course Nirvana is going to be the first thing that jumps to everyone's mind....I myself have seen a "Nirvana" resurgence just in my circle of friends, perhaps wishing for the past...Personally, never got into them....At least after all that "Unplugged" crap (which EVERYONE was doing in the 90s) I kind of just let them fall by the wayside....But then again....that wasn't my style
The 90s for me symbolized the end of punk rock.....The late 80s death of Operation Ivy (more like ska, but don't dare tell them they're not "punk") leading into the beautiful creation of Rancid....Now there's MY band of the 90s...."And Out Come The Wolves" is TO THIS DAY one of my all-time favorite albums, mainly for its ability to show that everyone in the band can play their respective instruments pretty damn well
So the 90s starts out well for me....several CDs put out by Rancid....The beginnings of the "not-so-talented yet still sound good" Green Day....Yes, they played the same 3 chords for every song, but they made it work...up until the "Insomniac" album was released....NOFX was putting out great stuff and my good ol' suburban boys Screeching Weasel were flying higher than ever
BOOM....Rancid spends some time in Jamaica and comes back with a reggae sound, followed by putting off their next album for about 4 years....Green Day sells out completely.....NOFX's child-like antics aren't enough to keep me listening....And Screeching Weasel starts releasing all this EMO crap, which just sent them straight down the toilet
(at this point I would like to point out that Goldfinger was quite good for some time....yet they decided to drop a "purely ska" album on me, ending our relationship)
So the 90s started out beautifully and ended just as painful as a 400 lbs. man doing a belly-flop into the kiddie pool
So while I spent most of my time listening to punk all throughout this era....I can wholeheartedly say that there were some very productive and memorable songs released by a lot of talented bands
Yet, I weep for our future....Anyone turn on a radio lately???....Can you believe this CRAP?!?!??!
P.S. Everclear was SOOO overrated...At least their music was "catchy"
