90s rock

The nineties was a time of branches sprouting of the rock n roll tree. A calmer scene began to appear, but still kept the power of the traditional heavyness. Bands like Deep Blue Something, Fountains of Wayne, Nirvana and Everclear showed us the way. (If you haven't heard of the last two I pity you.)
Presidents of The United States of America were a godsend. Peter Andre was...an interesting man. REM taught us not to fear the end of the world.

Was there something to this short lived genre of gentle bands that didn't suck? Did it have to go from Breakfast at Tiffany's to Float On? Did it have to take the dramatic fall down to the pits of hell? I say that we should go back to classic days of Seattle bands rocking us out of our miserable live...well I was only about seven or eight at most of these songs but they still stick with me and I still listen to them. Any thoughts?

P.S. You should listen to Breakfast at Tiffany's by Deep Blue Something. It's really good and describes the genre I'm referring to.

Me, well I know my music. 90's er, I tend to like some of the bands the composed ablums during then. Mostly Nirvana, Grunge was the best genre of music during the early 90's. Kurt just brought the best out of all the lyrics that he wrote. It was great. But you know, other than that, I guess I have never listened to much other bands except GNR which was in the early 90's too, in the 90's. But from what I have heard. It was a great Era.

One of the rock radio stations in my area just had the "smells like the 90's weekend" where they only played songs from the 90's. I have to say that some amazing rock songs came from back then.

What?

I wasnt a big rock fan back then, i was more into the Beastie Boys. Still love em. MAybe im just ignorant and dont know some of my favorite rock comes from the nineties, but it seems to me most of it comes from the eighties. Nirvana i know, and i love them, white stripes too (i think).

Good to see I'm not alone here

Regardless....90s rock was like any other era and had its own highs and lows (except this decade, don't count on anything memorable out of these times)....Of course Nirvana is going to be the first thing that jumps to everyone's mind....I myself have seen a "Nirvana" resurgence just in my circle of friends, perhaps wishing for the past...Personally, never got into them....At least after all that "Unplugged" crap (which EVERYONE was doing in the 90s) I kind of just let them fall by the wayside....But then again....that wasn't my style

The 90s for me symbolized the end of punk rock.....The late 80s death of Operation Ivy (more like ska, but don't dare tell them they're not "punk") leading into the beautiful creation of Rancid....Now there's MY band of the 90s...."And Out Come The Wolves" is TO THIS DAY one of my all-time favorite albums, mainly for its ability to show that everyone in the band can play their respective instruments pretty damn well

So the 90s starts out well for me....several CDs put out by Rancid....The beginnings of the "not-so-talented yet still sound good" Green Day....Yes, they played the same 3 chords for every song, but they made it work...up until the "Insomniac" album was released....NOFX was putting out great stuff and my good ol' suburban boys Screeching Weasel were flying higher than ever

BOOM....Rancid spends some time in Jamaica and comes back with a reggae sound, followed by putting off their next album for about 4 years....Green Day sells out completely.....NOFX's child-like antics aren't enough to keep me listening....And Screeching Weasel starts releasing all this EMO crap, which just sent them straight down the toilet

(at this point I would like to point out that Goldfinger was quite good for some time....yet they decided to drop a "purely ska" album on me, ending our relationship)

So the 90s started out beautifully and ended just as painful as a 400 lbs. man doing a belly-flop into the kiddie pool

So while I spent most of my time listening to punk all throughout this era....I can wholeheartedly say that there were some very productive and memorable songs released by a lot of talented bands

Yet, I weep for our future....Anyone turn on a radio lately???....Can you believe this CRAP?!?!??!

P.S. Everclear was SOOO overrated...At least their music was "catchy"

I like GnR for 90s. I also like Pearl Jam, and I hate Nirvana. Gnr was my fave from the 90s anyways.

I wish I would have seen this thread earlier. I love early 90's rock. Alot of great bands were around at this time that can never be recreated or even compared to bands of nowadays because they were so much better. I love Soundgarden, Chris Corneil has some of the most amazing vocals I have ever heard. Layne Staley from Alice in Chains is in my opinion, a grunge god. He and Jerry Cantrell are two of the best singers/song writers in the Grunge genre. Nirvana is ok, I think people need to get off of Kurt's nuts. Just because he died doesn't make him the best song writer that ever lived. Stone Temple Pilots was great band too back in the day. There were many great rock bands that definitly changed what rock music was. Tool was and still is a great Metal band that arrived on the scene in '92. Maynard has great vocals, and his writing is just so much more meaningful than most of the **** these stupid pop rock bands sing about these days. Too much to mention.

Pearl Jam was probably my favorite band of the 90's even though I dont like a lot from the 90's. I think they are 10 times better than Nirvana, and only reason everybody thinks Nirvana is so great, is because that dip sh!t killed himself.
I also like soundgarden.

MrRob, nice to see an old school NOFX fan around here! I have to say, they 90s were one of the most revolutionary times for music.

Dropkick Murphys, Spin Drs., Sponge, Suicide Machines, Presidents of the United States of America (one of the best 90s bands), Sublime (another one of the best), Verve Pipe, The Offspring, Semisonic, and Bad Religion.

^These are just some of the most freakingly awesome bands of the 90s that no one mentioned. Sure, some of them stuck around after the 90s, and some were around before the 90s, but I think they hit their peak in -get this- the 90s!

Now I need to dig out my old music, and go all watery eyed with nostalgia.

Sorry for the double post, but I HAD to

I deserve 10 lashes from the whip for leaving Sublime off of my list....I got so into the whole punk thing while I was typing, forgot about my stoner days (forgot about stoner days )

By far one of the BEST bands I've ever heard....They combined so many different aspects of music throughout their reign and did it flawlessly

Funny how all their best albums were BEFORE the self-titled "Sublime" release....Just gimme "40 oz..." and "Robbin' the Hood" and I'm set for life

Could always use a little "Stand By Your Van" though....loved the live stuff

But by far one of my fav. bands of all time.....And I never got to see them live.....Stupid Brad....R.I.P.
