Intellectual Discussion Part 6: Antibiotic resistance
Antibiotic resistance for those who don't know, is when one takes antibiotics for medication, but stops taking them once he "feels better" instead of the full alotted time he was supposed to. So, the bacteria left over in the body adapt and essentially...become immune to that antibiotic and the next time they take it again when they get sick (say, penecillin for a sore throat) it is non-effective because the bacteria have formed an immunity towards Penecillin.
It is becoming a huge growing problem, and there isn't much way to stop it.
Thoughts?

I see a super-virus on the horizon. We will keep making new anti-biotics and the bacteria will keep evolving resistance. Eventually, we will run out of a-b and the bacteria will pwn us. We're all screwed.

Bacteria already pwn us. And for the super-virus it'll come whenever it wants(we can't cure viruses, only bacterial diseases). This is what I say: It's bad.

The organism most fit to survive is often the simplist. With all we can do with technology these days, we can't cure a silly little common cold because of its ability to adapt on the spot. And we think we are intelligent. HAHAHA
As for medications, I don't believe in them for 99% of common ailments. The human immune system needs to be tested and it has to learn from its experiences in order to function to its full potential.
As for stopping medications before they are done because you feel better....you're an idiot. As was already stated, the few invaders who are aren't killed by the medicine will be very pissed off and come back much stronger only to make your life even more miserable.

Its not intelligence...it is evolution at a much more rapid pace.

Yes, also the reason that the immune system is soo low right now, is because of the "Obeciety (sp?) Epidemic" Which in my mind is just sad, people are getting soo lazy that when they get fat, it is now an illness.
Anywho, I think that we should be able to learn from these adapting virusis, I mean think of all the new treatments we would be able to make if you find out WHY the bactria changes, and have you medicine change right with it. Man that would kick arse. Oh well, maybe all this stuff about stem cells will help out sooner than the next10-15years.

All this stuff about stem cell research, by a CANADIAN scientist!
America might not even be able to use it, Bush says the Embryo is the start of life...or whatever he says, and it shouldn't be destroyed. So....GL with stem cell research, looks like Knuckville will have to handle this

Dude, if you are gonna post something in a "Smart-convo" topic, at least have your facts straight.
Bush did say that the embyro is a sacrid thing, and shouldnt be killed, but he decided to go along with stem cell research anyways. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he still knows this will be a huge breakthrough.

You seriously dont think that only one Canadian scientist is working on this. Pretty much every college with a lab is working on Stem Cell Research. I think it is safe to say that there is more than one Kanuk working on it, and if there was only one we would be screwed, because he would get distracted when the new flavor of syrup came out.
**EDIT** Sorry otter about making fun of you for being a stupid Canadian, it isnt your fault you live there....

Bush allowed a handful of labs to continue research with minimal funding, barely enough to get anywhere.

We know how they adapt. When the antibiotics get in the body, there are always a few bacteria that are naturally resistant, due to genetic recombination and mutation. These bacteria survive and repopulate, bringing illness back. Some of the new bacteria are resistant to the next antibiotic used, etc. The bacteria that eventually comes out is resistant to all antibiotics used.

I'm almost never sick. I haven't been sick in over a year, and that was from food poisoning. I never take medicine, I never get flu shots. I don't need it. Well that's not true, I do take Advil. Still most medicine, I think 90% of the time are just placebos. My immune system is up and running, so why should I take sugar pills? I don't know why people feel the need to run to the doctor for every little thing. He's just going to say here take this and pay a hundred and fifty dollars for it.
