you can play online just fine without it but your experience isnt at its fullest. it is a lot more fun with a mic just as lufeng said above. you meet people, talk about some interesting stuff when you are waiting for your last 3 guys to camp a draw against 1 enemy you don't get to hear ANYTHING at all.
i find a game of SOCOM the most fun when the WHOLE team is into nothing but team communication while alive. it just feels so real when you find rooms such as these...

There are a lot of times where a team will be losing and when you join the game and end up on their team, they are silent. When people don't work together, it's so obvious they are not going to do good (most of the time at least) Plus, when no one talks, its stupid. It's even worse when you go "Hey did anyone set mines here at the stairs by blah blah" and no one answers because they aren't using team work and just running around thinking they could take everyone out. Guarantee most of the time, they will lose to a team that DOES use communication.
I love when 2 or 3 people call their mines in the beginning, and then throughout the game, people are going "how does it look on the left?" or "Any anyone see anything" and its even better when you are dead and people are like "Dude, that bi@tch is lagging!" lol. Trust me, its worth the 30 dollars for the mic. It was for me, and still is.
