The M-14 was suppose to give the user, the hard hitting single shot of the M-1 Garand, but the need for a auto was also there. The hardiness of the M-1, was there, also. (It was the answer to the lighter weight, of the M-1 and the auto fire rate, of the B.A.R.) And because of the recoil, single shot was supposed to be used more, than auto. But the jungle firefights in Vietnam, turned the avarage shooter, into the "spray and pray" type. They ran out of ammo fast. With the M-16, more ammo could be carried, which was the main concern. Needless to say, the M-14 is a harder hitting weapon. And used right, it'll knock down more bodys, than the M-16, at a longer distance. And up close, for that matter. I think Socom does a good job, of showing that. That's why people, that really know how to use it, do so well. And, FYI, I believe the Marine grunts used the M-14 till the late 60's. My Buddy was killed, by a sniper, while carring one.
