i know what you need. im sorry to say but your gonna need about $50. i use verizon online DSL also. had the same problem! what you need to do is buy a router. i found out why. verizons DSL is very unsteady in speeds. the router keeps the DSL around the same speed. so the connection was speeding up and slowing down when the ps2 was tryin to test the connection, not allowing it to connect properly. i bought a $40 dollar linksys router. not bad price. no user name or password required. they think DSL is the same as dial-up, but faster. it isnt. its the samething as cable but slower. just get a router. hook it up. and choose auto settings with no username and no pass. and connect! and your on

7SEALS is correct. I had the same problem with SBC yahoo DSL. Went out and bought a router and it solved my problem. I recommend the Netgear router over the linksys. I started with the linksys and that thing is tough to configure, the netgear was pretty user friendly plug and play following the cd roms instrutions.

btw the guest's reponse cracked me up. LOL

Yeah it was plug and play but it only lasted for a week and it stopped working. I might have gotten a defective one. I ended up returning it and buying the netgear router which has never given a problem and it's been about 4 months.

I used to have Verizon DSL too and it sucks compared to cable which I now have. But aside from that, I never had a router for the longest time and everything ran great. I finally got a netgear one because I was tired of switching the ethernet cable back and forth between my PS2 and my computer... but prior to that.. I never had any problems aside from the fact that its laggier than cable... but the point is I've done it all so I know what I'm talking about...

ANYWAY

There's no reason why you would NEED a router to connect to Socom with DSL. The whole point of a router is that you can have different devices hooked up to the internet at one time. If your only using the net to play Socom, don't waste 50 bucks. I mean, maybe I'm totally wrong.. but as a computer literate person, I can't see any reason why a router is necessary to solve this guys problem..

Thousands of people play Socom with DSL every day without routers. I'd try calling your DSL provider and tell them what the problem is.. You didn't buy the service from them for it not to work.. or only to work if you spend another $50. Maybe theres a trick or something small your overlooking they can help you out with.

As AL GIORDINO said, there is absolutely no reason why you HAVE to get a router. Sure if you would like to have your computer and PS2 online at the same time it makes it easier but, it does not assist in anyway in making your connection.

Hardware Install:
Now as far as the connection is concerned. First off I too have Verizon and I have never had trouble connection, with or without the router. Now from the sounds of it you just got Verizon recently, because you have the new Westell Wirespeed that contains both an RJ45 (Ethernet) jack and a USB jack. YOU CAN NOT HAVE BOTH CONNECTED at the same time. The modem will not know where to send the data. So you should have 3 wires coming out of the back of your modem.

Power Cord
Phone cable
Ethernet cable OR USB cable (I repeat not both)

Now the power cord is pretty obvious. The phone cable should have a clean run to the wall. Do not have any of the DSL line filters between the modem and the wall jack or it will not work. Next the Ethernet cable should go directly from the modem to your PS2.

At this point you should have your hardware setup correctly. The setup is identical if you have a router except, the ethernet cable goes to the input of the router. Then another piece of ethernet cable goes from one of the routers four output ports to the ps2.

One last thing I should mention. Your router has the following 4 lights:

Power ---Obvious but make sure it is on and steady
Ready --- Very important, means your modem is in sync with Verizon. If this is not steady you will not get online
Ethernet --- This will only go solid when the PS2 is turned on(unless there is a router in-line, it would always be solid)
USB --- This light should never be lit up, unless you have to use USB as opposed to Ethernet

So lets talk software now.

First off you will need to have your verizon username and password handy. Secondly we need to break it down in two ways, (with router and w/o router)

Software Install Without Router:

I will add this section when I get home, because I forget the exact order and wording of the wizard. However, I really think your problem was that you had a USB and Ethernet cable connected to your modem at the same time.

Al. he needs a router dude. i have the same modem as him and all. it took me about 2-3 months to figure out i needed one. i called sony 3 times and verizon 3 times and they didnt know what to do each time. after me posting on numerous message boards, asked wtf to do, a guy came out of the blue and told me the whole story. he said i need a router. i bought a router and now my DSL works with socom 2. there is no trick. i tried logining numerous times. tryied power cycling. i even tryed my friends modem. nothin worked. you need a router. just trust me on this. i know verizon like the back of my hand by now. your lucky you found this answer now. you woulda been listening to these people who have no clue what they are talkin about. and you would tried callin verizon. and sony ect ect. just a simple question with a complicated answer. to make it short. you need a router. no other way. tried them all.

-----------------------------------------
grey. he needs a router. the only thing that requires a username and pass is the verizon online control panel. this is only a thing that allows you to take advantage of the package you purchased. like for me. i get 5 free .com websites with unlimited bandwith. and 8 free YOURNAME@YOURSITE.COM e-mail addresses. just trust me. he needs a router. ive talked to numerous people. you need a router. no username. no pass. its a router. you will just waste your time trying to do what these people say. i did too. wasting my time. people telling me i needed a user name and pass. i tried my username and pass. and i tried my moms username and pass and they both dont work. im tryin to save you sometime by telling you that you need to purchase a router.

I don't understand how Verizon DSL can work so differently all over the place, but maybe it does. I used to have to enter an ID and password into Socom, and I connected without a router..

Apparently 7, you can connect without ID and password, but you need a router.. So I don't know..

I guess the best thing to do is to tell this guy all our opinions and let him try it. For any one person to says "This is what will definately work, and nobody else is correct" is just wrong, especially if your telling someone to go spend more money...

Personally, I think it makes no sense. Tell me how a router magically makes it connect. If anything, routers are more of a pain in the *** because they have built in firewalls that you need to go in and open specific ports so Socom works at all, and the mic works too.

Bottom line is.. Verizon DSL is internet. It's not internet just for computers, you can use it for whatever device you wish, and it should work with all of them, without routers. I just really think this guy set his up wrong... if its set up correctly, Verizon DSL should work fine. I actually think I had to call Verizon to get mine to work too.

And maybe I'm totally wrong 7, but maybe I'm right and you spent $$ on a router, and meanwhile it might be working now from something totally unrelated.

I'd switch my internet service provider before I went and spent more money on an unneccessary peice of hardware, but hey, thats just my opinion.
