I'm not saying they should have locked him up for life or castrated him the first time, but steps need to be taken just to be safe.
Not that I ever want kids (they smell, scream, and cost money), but I wouldn't want them round a known sex offender. Don't care if it was 20 years ago or 20 days ago.

Boy england it is VERY rare if I disagree with you but right now I am. My dad is 45 and my step mom is 48 thats a 3 year difference.. when she was 18 he was 15.. I know it's different but you don't know what happend when he was 17 maybe the girl said ok then changed her mind. Im not saying it's right what he did but it's not like he was 30 going for a 15 year old.

The father may have a valid case since he is not registered as a pedophile, and what he did was a very long time ago, but you need to consider who he is going up against. Not only is he up against a law in the County, but he's going up against the entire community as well. Like BoyEngland mentioned, what he did many years ago will always be on the minds of the people. If the Superintendent allows this man to attend the graduation, she's possibly going to have 5,000 angry parents calling up rather than 1 man. Given the sex offender situation that many parents feel strongly about, it would be "suicide" for the Superintendent to grant an exception to this man, no matter how deserving he may be.

I'm not too worried about age difference when you are older, but when you are younger it seems a bit weird.
My step dad is 50 and my mum is 44, her best friend and her husband have a 12 year age gap I think.
If I were to go out and find a girl to get together with etc, I wouldn't go for one who is more than 1 year younger than me, and she can't be older than be. That's a big no no.
I'm not saying there is something wrong with age gaps larger than that, or a woman being older than a man, but I suppose it's just preference.
A girl I used to know and one of my brother's friends once got together. He was 17 and she was 15 at the time. They were in a happy relationship until they broke up so she put him on rape charges as "revenge". Don't know how he went with the charges, but he got his jaw broken by her brothers.
Honestly I don't mind paedophiles so long as they don't get me or my family involved in their little hobby of molestation. But as a parent (if I was one) I wouldn't be able to sit there as a sex offender watched my kid.

I think have a sollution to this dilema. Obviously, this guy who payed for his crime in the name of the law, will never pay for his crime according too society ( rightfully so) he wants to be a part of his son's life. Ok Great, Put a miniature Jail Cell on Caster Wheels, lock him in it, throw the cage on a hand truck and wheel him on in to the auditorium Hannibal Lechter style to see his son graduate. He get's the satisfaction of going to his sons graduation while people around him get to be satisifed to see him incarcerated once again, if only temporarily. Everybody's Happy

Well I think the whole situation is bollocks. The man is a sex offender, but to bar him specifically from going to a school without barring him from going anywhere that might involve young women being there is silly.
We have all found 15 year old girls attractive... when we were between the ages of 13-17, a fifteen year old girl was desirable. He was 17 when he raped her... what he did was wrong, but most men move on from liking teenage girls and this guy must have if he has a son from another woman.

"I'm always preaching education to my children. How does that make me look if I'm not there at graduation?"
I wouldn't worry about what this makes him look like...he is already a sex offender. -_-
I do think it is pretty ridiculous to not let him go to his son's graduation when he was convicted over 20 years ago.

This is a situation that happens a lot in American and can lead to a lot of people getting labeled sex offender for the rest of there life. If a situation like this happen to this guy, then he's getting robbed from enjoying important things in his life. You can never know the full situation in any story. I know we would like to believe that he's a big bad criminal rapist and all, but some times things are not so black and white.

Bullocks! Kevin's the original, anything else would be a pale imitation.
This sums this whole story up:

Seriously, we're talking about convicted sex-offenders. Regardless of how much time has passed or the severity of the offense, the truth is that the person in question has committed a sex-crime.
