Earthquakes in Midwest

Chicago, IL (AHN) - An earthquake estimated to measure 5.2 on the Richter scale rocked Illinois Friday morning. So far, there have been no reports of any injuries or damage caused by the tremor.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the temblor was six miles from West Salem. It shook the area at 4:36 a.m.

The area lies near the New Madrid Fault, the largest center for seismic activity in Illinois, but there was no confirmation if the dawn earthquake originated from the New Madrid Fault.

CBS 2 staff felt the tremor, reporting that its audiovisual equipment shook. The network's crew were preparing for the early news broadcast when the temblor struck. CBS 2 executive producer John Dodge, who was still home that time, said he woke up because of a rattling sound.

The earthquake was also felt by Cincinnati and St. Louis residents.

The earthquake prompted a number of residents to call 911 for assistance. Right after the tremor, the National Weather Service in Romeoville also started to receive calls about temblor across Chicago from as far as Valparaiso, meteorologist Bill Wilson told the Chicago Tribune.

I live just south of Indianapolis, Indiana, and I felt some movement around 5:38 am (it woke me up) for just a few seconds. I just now felt another movement for a mere two seconds. Anyone else live in the wide radius of the epicenter that experienced the quake?

I didn't even know there were earthquakes in the Midwest. I live in California so earthquakes happen nearly every day so I'm used to it. 5.2 earthquakes are just moderate ones. Nothing to be really scared of. We get at least a 5 around 1-2 times a month here.

Haha, I'm not scared at all, it's just that I've never experienced one (at least in memory, I did when I was an infant...). I'm well aware of the frequent happenings along the west coast. =)

Some people around here in Iowa said that they felt it but I never did. So I'm not quite sure. I know it was felt in Eastern Iowa though.

I heard people as far as Atlanta (and Florida, but...) felt a bit of shaking. I don't know how possible that is considering it was a 5.2 magnitude. I don't know that much about earthquakes. =P

I was in the shower and it shook my window and shower door.

Knocked a window cover down in Downtown Louisville too!
