Well I just saw something on TV saying that 1ton (tonne? IDK) of CO2 is released into the atmosphere for every 1ton (tonne? IDK again) of concrete made...... lets just not make concrete for a day and everyone can still use their lights during Earth Hour.

(I don't vouch for validity of the concrete statistics)

I would seriously laugh my arse off if some plank shut off the lights at an airport. Although it would be no laughing matter for any aircraft landing at that time...

Haha yea!

I can just imagine seen the news at 10 saying Heathrow couldn't open terminal 5 because they want to participate in Earth Hour.

Turning of runway lights would just create an added challenge for us to watch pilots to overcome, would replace those seemingly endless crosswind landing videos on YT. Thinking about it, would the news be that terminal 5 couldn't open due to a power cut, or because it was destroyed by a plane landing on it?

In all seriousness, this Earth Hour malarkey is just a complete joke at the expense of many gullible people.

Maybe they should convince people to stop driving for the period of time as well.

These tree-huggers need to spend more time finding alternative substitutes and not simply turning the problem off like a lightswitch.

Quote of the month!

If people want to hug trees (not that it's the topic at hand) then I say cut them down with the tree.

I also devised a way to save the planet when I was bored during class a few weeks ago. All these people who are Eco friendly and whatever, don't cremate them when they die. Just sell the bodies to fellow Eco warriors to use as a substitute for firewood..... genius! (I know it won't work but they should still do it)

This is an alternative, because no one is simply going to stop driving for an hour. Two million people in Sydney, Australia -- one city -- turned off lights AND appliances for one hour to do something. Not everyone did, but those who felt like making a difference, and that's what counts. Don't feel like participating? That's your prerogative.

Bulbs aren't the only things that give off light, so I'm sure people used lanterns and candles during this time period, and that's if they felt they really needed to. Heck, some may have gone outside where there is natural light from stars and the sun ray's reflection off the moon. It's not like it was total darkness.

As I said before, it's only a start; results are not going to show as much as they would in a larger time frame. I highly doubt they all had in mind that this would fix the problem right then and there. It also helps to be a little optimistic, yeah?

And I hope you aren't considering me a "tree-hugger."

If you meet any of these "requirements", then yes I consider you a tree hugger: (No particular order to these)
  • You purposely use recycled products because you want to help the world in some way.
  • You use energy saving light bulbs for the same reason.
  • You drive an Eco-friendly car and not just because you thought it was a nice car.
  • You don't use any kind of aerosols.
  • You dig through rubbish to salvage whatever you think can be reused.
  • You walk around with those "the end is nigh" shirts on or something related.
  • You hug trees
(You get the idea)

Otherwise, no.

i once heard that turning your pc off and on actually uses more power than leaving it running for 24 hours straight. i remember being told something similiar about lightbulbs and most other small household type electrical appliances.

so um yeah, good goin you dirty hippies you've just instigated the world's first global FAIL. congrats you tofu eating bunny huggers.

They also say that your PC uses 1 barrel of oil for every 90 days straight it is on...

I would just turn mine off on the 89th day, does that make me a good person?

Environmentalists (SP?) are 3rd on my list of groups I hate. 1st is asylum seekers and 2nd is the government for allowing them in.

where as i do believe if enough people do this Earth Hour thing it would save a tremendous amount of Energy, in the long scheme of things it wont do anything anyway because that saved energy will just be used up by something else.

Second of all, it has NOTHING to do with global warming, and im still not even sure we're to blame for most of Global Warming. Statistically, this year has been the coldest average temp. (global) in the last decade... if the world is warming up, it should be the warmest? I think our planet is just taking it's natural course... there was an ICE AGE before we were even here, and it took hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years for it to develop and retreat. Im sure we're still 'recovering' as a planet from the Ice Age. I wouldnt be surprised if in 100 years from now people will be freaking out about global cooling, and say we had something to do with it. im only 22, but ask your parents, your boss, and they'll tell you about 30 or so years ago, they were saying we were in global cooling.

Im not denying we have a problem. we are obsessed with energy, and we do consume too much. However i do NOT believe we are to blame for 'Global Warming' and i do NOT believe an hour of un used energy will do anything to help. We should be devoting more time to find alternate, environment friendly sources of energy. Im not one to believe the oil is almost depleated, either... but we have the technology to have a healthier source of energy.. we just need to find it. I dont know, just my 2 cents. If you feel the need to take part in this earth hour thing, more power to you, but im sure that saved energy will just be consumed by something else anyway. 6 billion people on this planet, and if just 1 billion participate, there are still 5 billion other consuming energy. if all of those 5 billion people have just 2 lights on, thats 10 billion lights being used compared to the 1 billion people NOT using lights. those 5 billion will also be watching TV, playing video games, surfing the internet... dont forget the news stations, other studios, sports complexes, industrial plants, airports, train stations, and countless of other things will still be running full strength. i just dont see how that will help in the long run.

ok, im done now
