I don't know why you wouldn't use Craigslist. Maybe not to buy from there, but use it as a reference and see what people are selling. Then possibly cross-reference those cars with Carfax or other informational sites.

My 1997 F250 is used, but I got it for free from my grandfather, so I don't know much about finding a used car the way you are approaching it. Unless you want a truck, then I can help ya there.

Stay away from older VW's they have awful history and are still rated the worst car you can buy because they break all the time. They are getting better but if you buy something pre 2005 expect problems.
That's solid advice there Hondas and Toyotas are bullet proof, they make great used cars, and you can pick one up for a fairly reasonable price, don't worry to much about high mileage on those. If your leaning towards a truck=Ford

You gotta think like this:

The car may be one price, but as soon as you get it, you'll add on a few hundred for a tune up and an oil change. Also, a possible pair of new tires. You always need to do so because you'll have no idea what the car's previous owner did in manner of up-keep. The bad thing about used cars, is that they'll nickel and dime you for as long as you have them. As soon as you fix one thing, there is another problem to address. I know, I have a Ford Aerostar sitting in my driveway brokedown right now.

My first car was an '85 Ford LTD Crown Victoria. It was an awesome car, man. Like a little tank or something. The only thing that sucked was the fact that the heavy steel frame pretty much strangled my gas mileage to death in the most horrific ways imaginable.

I eventually drove it to death. It doesn't run anymore as far as I know. It just gave up one day, but I had a great run with it. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I hope you have deep pockets to pay for a gas guzzling SUV with gas nearly at $4.00 a gallon.

Don't get an SUV. They're for tools and prissy women.
