The little growth does not help the bird and an example like this one you gave certainly makes Darwin's theories seem foolish. Evolution is a decent theory but also has quite a few holes.
As for how we came to be based on evolutionary theories...........(the short story)
Mammilian life begins in Africa and apes live in the trees. These apes gain primitive intelligence being high and watching what happens on the ground. Africa is loaded with trees, which means it is loaded with apes.
Thanks to continental drift and global climate changes, the enviornment of Africa goes from jungle to desert. This forces the majority of apes to resort to running for their lives while the strongest remain in the trees. the strong ones that remain are still apes today.
As for those who had the unique ability to actually run, they survived by hunting and hiding. Survivors have sex while hiding which leads to the passing on of their mutated (unique) genes to their offspring.
Fast forward many many years, and this band of survivors seek further migration for survival and the only place to do this would be by leaving Africa. Enter the middle east.
It is here, many many MANY more years where our human-like ancestry started to flourish. With minimal intelligence comes minimal thoughts as well as superior gullability. For an excellent and hysterical interpretation of how this band of survivors started to disagree with each other and form their own cults/clicks/religions, I HIGHLY recommend watching Monty Python's Life of Brian.
Too tired to type more. It's Friday, and I need to evolve into a sack of crap on my couch.
