Yes, and they also missed the oil storage tanks. We also have to thank the Japanese Admiral(can't remember his name) that thought a third attack, would be to much of a chance. If a third wave had gone out, I think the war would have lasted months more. Maybe even a year.

Well if anyone wants to waste precious minutes of their life reading my debate layout, here ya go......... (FYI I'm not saying I belive this stuff. It's just a typical stoopid school assignment)

INTRODUCTION
"Very late on a cold, dark night in December, a British emissary was driven through the dreary streets of Washington. Inside his diplomatic pouch he carried a secret message marked Most Urgent Personal and Secret to the President. It was a triple priority message from the British Admiralty in London that the United States of America was going to be attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7th. Lord Halifax was swiftly shown in to the White House and conferred with Franklin Roosevelt. Roosevelt's hopes soared; his long-laid plans were about to be fulfilled. It was December 5th, 1941."

Pearl Harbor was not a surprise! It was not a mere failure of American intelligence. It was not a brilliant Japanese military stike. President Roosevelt (FDR) provoked the attack, knew about it in advance and covered up his failure to warn the Hawaiian commanders. Why was this outrageous action even a consideration? The answer is simple….. the public and Congress were overwhelmingly against entering the war in Europe and we all unfortunately know what happens when the American population is AGAINST our involvement in a war….. . The attack on Pearl Harbor was his ticket to the “big show”
• Pearl Harbor was not about war with Japan -
It was about war with GERMANY
Most important was the promise FDR had made to the American people - solemnly given and repeated--not to send their sons into foreign war unless attacked. It was written that Roosevelt did not feel he could openly violate his pledges. But he could get around them the smart way." This meant getting the Germans to shoot first. Then he could shoot back. But it was clear to him by November of 1941 that the Germans were not going to shoot first. But FDR knew that he could force the Japanese to do so.
• We knew that HITLER WOULD NOT DECLARE WAR if the U.S. appeared to be UNBEATABLE. So what were our options?
1. First of all, the OBJECTIVE at the time was War with Germany. How do you bait Hitler to declare war on you? Well appearing unbeatable isn’t going to work!
2. We did try to provoke Hitler in the Atlantic but he didn’t bite.
3. FDR knew that if Japan attacked, Germany would declare war.
4. Therefore…. the problem was how to maneuver Japan into firing the first shot or make the first overt act.
5. It was fairly easy to see that Japan must succeed or else Hitler would grow even more powerful.

• The McCollum Memo:
The Smoking Gun of Pearl Harbor
On October 7, 1940, Lieutenant Commander Arthur McCollum of the Office of Naval Intelligence submitted a memo to Navy Captains Walter Anderson and Dudley Knox. Captains Anderson and Knox were two of President Roosevelt's most trusted military advisors.
The memo detailed an 8 step plan to provoke Japan into attacking the United States. President Roosevelt, over the course of 1941, implemented all 8 of the recommendations contained in the McCollum memo. Following the eighth provocation, Japan attacked. The public was told that it was a complete surprise, an "intelligence failure", and America entered World War Two.
This memo, which proves that the government of the United States desired to lure Japan into an attack, was declassified in 1994. It took fifty years for the truth about Pearl Harbor to be revealed. Will we have to wait that long for the truth of 9-11 to come out?
• WHY SACRIFICE OLD, SLOW SHIPS?
1. FDR had to allow Pearl Harbor to happen in order to get into the war, as he himself later told Stalin. He needed massive public outrage and that required big sacrifice.
2. Is it entirely coincidental that FDR saved all the important elements of the fleet from being destroyed? In the spring he had sent many ships to the Atlantic. He kept the aircraft carrier Saratoga on the West Coast. And his sending of the two carrier groups out of harbor meant that not only they but also their fast escort ships would be saved - all the new ships stationed at Pearl Harbor were saved. Only WWI junk was left in harbor.
3. In actuality, the Japanese only destroyed a lot of old hardware. In a sense they did us a favor."
On 7 December at 2:15 PM, minutes after hearing of the attack and before any damage reports were in, FDR called Lord Halifax at the British Embassy and told him "Most of the fleet was at sea...none of their newer ships were in harbour." He had protected the new ships, the important elements of the fleet, and that fact was at the forefront of his mind in relation to the attack. First, it means FDR didn't care about the old ships. Secondly, it means he knew before the attack that only old ships were in harbor for the attack. Therefore, Pearl Harbor was "the first shot without too much danger to ourselves" he sought. FDR was the architect of the attack plot from the oil embargo to the ultimatum to the final touches of deciding who would live and who would die.

• Nuclear threat
The attack on Pearl Harbor was also used to justify the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945--costing the lives of more than 200,000 people.
President Truman justified the atomic bombing on the grounds that it saved lives by bringing a quicker end to the war. But Japan was already ready to surrender before the bombs were dropped.
The real reason for Hiroshima and Nagasaki was to demonstrate to Russia and the rest of the world the awesome power of America’s new weapon of mass terror.
The parallels between Pearl Harbor and the recent terrorist attacks lead us to ask the same questions "Are we to believe that the $30 billion annual intelligence budget, immense electronic eavesdropping capacity, and thousands of agents around the world, produce nothing in the way of a warning?" I may be an American, but I’m not as stupid as our government may assume.

CONCLUSION - ROOSEVELT WAS A TRAITOR

The US was warned by, at least, the governments of Britain, Netherlands, Australia, Peru, Korea and the Soviet Union that a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor was coming. All important Japanese codes detailing the attack were broken. FDR and others knew the attack was coming, allowed it and covered up their knowledge.

War with Japan was a given because they had to attack the Philippines. If Japan's fleet were destroyed, it would defeat the purpose. It would have been obvious suicide for Hitler to declare war if Japan were crippled - it would allow the US to attack him without even the possibility of a two-front war. That was what he had just been avoiding for months. The plan could only work if Japan's attack succeeded. The lure of a weakened US in a two-front war focused on Japan seemed to make a German war declaration cost-free. But it was all a trap - FDR was always going to ignore Japan and go after Hitler, for his ultimate goal was to save his beloved Soviet Communism.

FDR was a traitor for maneuvering Japan into war with US - and that is known and admitted! FDR was a traitor for sacrificing 2,403 American lives and wounding 1,178! FDR was a traitor for putting America in danger, and for manipulating the Constitutional power of Congress to approve war. FDR was a traitor for allowing 18 ships and 188 planes to be destroyed.

Day of infamy, indeed; he chose his words precisely with a hidden double-meaning. Four days before the attack, FDR could have sent telegrams of condolence to the families of the sailors he was going to allow to be killed.

Even today there is a coverup, based on a transparently bogus excuse of national security, that shows that our government cannot face the truth about what happened a half-century ago. Truth we owe the men of Pearl Harbor. Until we tell the full truth, we dishonor them and every soldier and sailor who gave their life for their country. Should their lives have been sacrificed for treason and no one know, then they had died in vain.

Roosevelt "lied us into a war because he didn't have the courage to lead us into it." --Clare Booth Luce

Your entire post is very enlightening, although I would tread carefully in some areas... I am simple quoting this line as an example... first of all, the older ships were not junk- certainly not as useful as their newer counterparts but they still had power in battle due to constant small updates combined with the general stagnation of naval development during the interwar years (these ships were 20-30 years old- several battleships built in 1944 are still on the navy's roster right now)... also, there were ships sunk or heavily damaged that were only a few years old

The other bit I would alter is the section on the nuclear strikes... the attack on pearl harbour was only a small part of the reasoning for nuking the japanese homeland... the justification by saying "they attacked us first, on our soil" or whatever other reasons you can tie into pearl harbour pale in comparison to the projected casualty figures of a conquest on the japanese homeland because the japanese were not going to capitulate any time before the end of '45

Sounded good from what I read.
Tora! Tora! Tora! would definitely have been a good movie to have watched.
Sounds pretty accurate from what I've heard, and seen in info-movies.

Not bad Boba! I agree with Jim, that it needs a bit of tweaking. Also, you forgot the Marines that died that day.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. I know I went off on a few tangents, but I did it to make the debate a little more exciting. The main goal was to just sound convincing whether we were telling the truth or not.
