I just heard about this today, Internet On Airplanes
http://www.theinternetpatrol.com/a-n...t-on-airplanes
Here is alittle about the story.......
The FCC approved a idea to expand the Wireless internet that most of us have today. Not only can you access the internet on the ground, but soon enough you will be able to surf the net while in the air. New equipment will be added to all passenger aircrafts world wide, which will allow laptop computers to be used. This is set to happen within the next couple of years, and there is no information on which company will supply the connection.

That would be a pretty big business for people who travel a lot and need the interenet. But not that many people have laptops and/or they don't take them on the plane.

Tons of people have laptops. People that travel on vacation would bring a laptop just to keep their kids occupied. Business men and women who travel need the internet to answer emails.
Personally I just use a laptop to watch DVD's when I travel but having the internet could be cool. Then I could mod from 10,000 feet above the ground.

It's a great new feature, which basically shows how advanced our technology has become. It will allow a lot of the people involved in the buisness world to get some work done rather then taking a nap on a four hour flight!
I wonder if people will have to pay an extra fee in order to access the connection? I'm sure every flight company might have their own policies, if there are more then one provider of the interent source.

Eh, it was basically just a matter of time I guess. I mean, everything is becoming more mobile, and how some cities talk of making a whole city (or part at least) wifi compatable, no suprise that it will be on an airplane, although it'll be interesting to see how exactly they do it.

It would be really cool to see how they are going to do it. I heard on the news out of Detroit, that they will attach equipment to the planes. The plane will have a solid connection wirelessly to the ground, then the plane will split the connection so the passengers can use it.
Although, you will be able to use a laptop computer, but you still cannot use your cellphone on a plane.

Well, supposedly cell phones can interfere with cockpit instrumentations...
I don't know what frequency cell phones work on, though, since current wireless standards are on the 2.4 (B & G) or 5.0? (A.. I don't remember A's) GHz bands. I wonder if that would have any effect on anything in the plane.
I would surely hope not, and I'm certain they wouldn't do it if there were risks.

I can imagine they wouldn't use it if would put passengers in danger. That is the last thing that Northwest, Southwest, Delta, etc. would want.
