I'm all for drilling in ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge). Hell, they've already got a hole there that was drilled in the 70's (I think, can't remember when they drilled it). I think it was Shell who drilled it there, but they aren't saying if they found a lot of oil, a little bit of oil, or no oil at all. However, I think that whoever drills there should be aware of what's around them. They should be aware of the natural habitat and try to not alter it as much as possible. Sure, some wildlife and some of the environment will be damaged or altered, but as long as that's kept to a minimum, it's all right.
Would drilling for oil in ANWR provide a magic wand relief? It might. This all depends on how much oil there is, and how much of that oil stays in the US. We shouldn't look to ANWR as the Jesus Christ-like figure of our times, but rather as a levee. If we make it and use it correctly, it should help us when the water starts to rise, but it won't stop a hurricane. So unless we use the time that it buys us to get the technology that we'll need to conserve oil by not needing it as much for things like transportation and electricity, unless we reinforce and make the levee stronger, we're gonna drown.
Now, to get to the subject of this thread. Perhaps Iran wouldn't want to stop selling oil to the US. We're one of (if not the) biggest customers they have. Am I saying that's what I think will happen? No, what I think will happen has already been stated by others and I feel no point in me restating that. I'm just submitting another possible scenario to the situation at hand.
