I know there are a lot of musicians here, but who all plays in a band?

This thread will be for band discussions and stuff. Share you stories.

My band played our first show this weekend. It was great except for the hazardous combination of beer and honey I ingested before going on. I puked 5 minutes before we started, spent the entire set tring not to vomit, and then wretched the rest up immediately afterwards.

Beer & honey do not mix.

I'm going to try it anyway just to see what kind of sludge comes up.

I play Congas in my band called Peachphish and will hopefully be sharing songs on Bass Guitar within a couple of months. I'm also planning on getting keyboards. But, my first order of business is me getting a Giant Stuffed Wild Boar Head complete with huge tusks to mount to the front of my new Conga Set in the next couple of weeks.

Everyone always asks us what we sound like and I tell them I can't classify it...Blues , Metal, Reggae , Phsychedelic , & Punk & a few covers here and there.
August 9th my band opens up for " Seven Mary Three " & " Days of the New ", which will be good exposure for our 4th show and only being together since January.

I played in a poppy band for a while. Our drummer quit. So the other guitarist, the bassist and I are in the process of starting a new band. We play metal. I scream. I tear it up when I scream.

Along side starting a new band, the other guitarist from the poppy band (who also sings) and I write acoustic music on our own and we played a short 2 song set like 2 weeks ago that went down well. And I just bought a piano, so we're hoping to incorporate piano and acoustic guitar into our songs.

Yeah I'm in a band called Call Me Out and I play Bass. Yeah you can check us out at purevolume. We used to be a powerpop band, but now that we lost some members we're probably going to be a post hardcore band. Yeah our first gig, our keyboardist didn't show and the guy we kicked out had his amp, recorder, and keyboard at our practice room. Then he texted us saying he would beat the crap out of us for kicking him out and taking his stuff. He said he would come over to get his stuff. Well our guitar players amp busted so we took the amp and keyboarder to the gig, and i had to play bass and keyboard. It was a nightmare

Just ordered a set of these for recording next week, can't wait to get'em. Guitar Center sells the same set for $99. Score!

Who else gets ridiculously excited for new gear?

That's a sweet deal for those. Right now I have Shure SM57's hooked up to my rig. They do the job but I will be looking to upgrade soon.

The bargain hunter shopping for band equipment is something that I'm getting used to. Guitar Center often has some really good deals. I'm good friends with a couple of brothers that have a local Music Store by me that I try to support. I hate going over their house, because looking at all their **** and rows & rows of vintage guitars makes me want to throw up. I can spend the whole day at the huge warehouse sized music stores. It's like a theme park.

What I'm liking about the band thing is the whole creative thought process that we put into everything. It's so much fun.

Musican's Friend has thrown me one to many dickens in the past. Everytime I've ordered something from them before 2 Shows and both times the items ended up being backordered and then notifying me of it the day I'm scheduled to get the goods.
However, the Bye-Weekly catalogues they send me keep me on the toilet for extended periods of time.

    Me too!
I plan on getting it at the local Guitar Center
Because I haggle with them, and they carry everything that MF has. I also plan to take my guitar and see how it sounds on the amp.

FYI: The mics are awesome, made a huge difference in recording quality. Now have six mics on drums, probably will add one or two more.

I think I need to get something like those for my Congas. I just have to figure out a way to clip them to the rims where they won't get in the way.
I'm thinking about maybe ordering this rack.
    DW 9000 Series Percussion Rack

So how's the recording going ? I can't wait till we finally do that in September. We may be traveling to Orlando for 4 days for that.

That rack would be great. You could hook the mics up on that so that they don't interfere with your playing.

Recording's going good so far. We figured out a good process that's allowing us to get more done in a shorter amount of time. I just wish we could devote larger amounts of time to it. Right now it's the game of a couple hours here and there, working around peoples' schedules. I'd like to just devote a whole weekend to it.

Me and some friends are trying to start a band.

There is a problem, the other guitarist. Yesterday we jammed for the first time in a while.

I play mostly lead-ish stuff, he plays alot of rythm-ish stuff, but theres still nos et in stone lead or rhythm guitarist.

Well eysterday, I had to do everything for him.

We were trying to make a song, he makes the intro, I'm like thats cool, then decide a riff to go into and he does what he does, goes well at first.

    Well, then I'm like.

Ok dude, hows this riff sound.

    "good"

Think you can make up something for it? or want me to try.

    "I can"

    Ok

*He tries for about 10 minutes, nothing, then he starts randomly going off into his own thing ignoring me*

    What are you doing?

    "Nothing I just gave up"

Let me try making something, I show him the riff I made once he had it down, I had something for it within 30 seconds.

It just pisses me off that he doesn't even try.

    advice?

If you're serious about making music, ditch'em. He either isn't interested or he doesn't know what he's doing.

I've been down this road, and what made it worse was that it was a good friend I had to shitcan. He was playing keys, and I thought he could play, but in the end he was just good at making weird noises. He could never actually play in key with a melody.

If you can do lead, you should be able to do rythm. You'll just need to pick up the slack until you find someone else.

In other news I finally got the videos up from my band's first live show. We're recording a demo right now to send to clubs to get more shows, and I wrote three badass tunes tonight. It's awesome being in a band.
