Go to your local game store and pick this up:

It's Metal Gear Solid 1,2 and 3 and all are playable from the PS2 system. You'll need a PS1 memory card for MGS1 though.

The series is extremely in depth, bad ***, emotional, intriguing, and just about any other positive word you can think of for something. The story line just pulls you in to the point of where it's pretty difficult to put the controller down. The game play gets better with each game because times change and so do the abilities of the games.

If you pick this up, when you get the chance to play Metal Gear Solid 4 after you beat the first three, then I recommend playing that game as well because it finishes the series. Also if you do pick this up and you like it, if you can find or get a hold of Metal Gear Solid: VR Mission for PS1, it's a fun/interesting play for hours.

The socom series.

For sci-fi the timesplitter games were always fun, I don't know if they went online or not.

I always enjoyed Mercenaries and the Godfather.

Mercenaries was grand theft tank
Godfather was GTA that takes place in the 50's

Driver 1 & Driver 2 are two awesome games I spent a lot of PS1/PS2 hours with. They're kinda like GTA, but the focus is on the driving.

Talking thnx some more

cool i also heard timesplitters was an awesome co op game also i heard mercenaries was good, but sadly after more than a few bad reviews from friends im not going to play driver games plus i like burnout revenge the best.

two more things i dont know if i made this clear anything remotely like gta cant really top it so when u compare godfather/ driver to it i know its going to be very simaler which i want variety.
and i didn't mean i hate fantasy games its just i dont like rpg's normally but if there is a special one through it on the thread.
one more thing u guys seem to only be putting 1-2 games u would help a little more if you but a list of your faves as long as they matched the criteria.
sorry for the long post please respond if you havent already.

a couple more...

1. Resident Evil 4 - horror action adventure/shooter, good replay value
2. God of War series - my personal favorites and some of the best rated PS2 games period. Action adventure games with an interesting story revolving around the Gods of Olympus and lots of unique weapons and abilities. There are definitely puzzles thrown in that require the use of those abilities, but it's not a puzzle game.
3. Prince of Persia series - I know you said no platformers, but if you haven't played a Prince of Persia game, it's nothing like Jax and Dexter or anything.
4. Timesplitters - as someone already said
5. Killzone
6. Black - I have not played Killzone or Black, but I've heard good things about them both (shooters)

Hope some of those help, I'm mostly an rpg kind of girl, so if you liked those I could tell you a bunch more.

Psychonauts. Trust me, it's amazing. I got it for the PC and couldn't stop playing... which was like a 11 hour experience through the middle of the night.
