Ps2 problems
I just got a 40gb PS3, stupidly thinking it would play PS2 games.
(I really need to beat Metal Gear Solid 3 before 4 comes out)
Instead of returning it and getting a backwards compatible one, I bought a PS2.
I used to have one, but it stopped working after a year and a half. Then I tore it into a billion pieces, trying to fix it.
Now my two-day-old Ps2 says it can't read the disc, no matter what disc I put in. :(
Has anybody else had this problem? Is there any way to fix it? I don't want to dissect this one, as I kept the receipt and can return it.

It's a faulty unit, you should return it. You should be able to just swap it straight over at the store, so I wouldn't bother with anything else.

Yeah, don't bother with sony on that one, leave it to the store, you should be able to return it no problem to them for another one.

I heard that there was a patch coming out to let the 40GB play the Ps2 titles...was that wrong? Or has it just not come out yet?

I don't think there's any truth to that. They took the hardware out of the PS3 that's required to play PS2 games, so it's not possible at the moment. They could release a software emulator, I suppose, but I think from Sony's point of view, it's not worth the time/money/effort, and I think we'd have heard about it by now.
