It would be nice if they could do a firware update so that the 40gb would be able to read PS2 games. I know they say it's not possible, but it's an optical drive, and I'm sure it could be done programatically.
Instead I expect, if anything, Sony to sell the popular PS2 games via downloads. They've done it well with PS1 games on the PSP, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't explore the possibility with PS2 games.
Yeah, but imagine how many complaints they would get if they did this. WOuld be nothing but "I already bought this game, I shouldn't have to do it again" and blah blah.

How come they can't just update the console with BC lists like the 360?
The official story is that the 40gb version does not contain the hardware necessary to play the games. It was left out in order to reduce the cost.
I don't think people would complain, really. People wouldn't have to buy the downloads, but those of us who have the 40gb versions would have an alternative.
