Full screen? For 1080p BR movies?
OK I put this in PlayStation section cause it is connected to the ps3 blu ray.

When I go to best buy and look at there tvs with the blu ray the image takes up the HOLE screen. I bought my 50 1080p TV from best buy and it was connected to blu ray player and had full image size.

But now when I connect the HDMI and put a blu ray movie in I still get the damn top and bottom cut off. I hate that so much. Is there a setting to make it full screen or do they do that on purpose?

I have aspect ratio on my controller to make it full but it stretches it out and makes it blurry.

To ask the people that don't like to read. Do all movies cut the top and bottom of the picture off?

You just have to make sure the movie your buying is in the full screen format, and not in widescreen silly.

Its a wide screen TV. Isn't it? When I buy full screen it cuts left and right side off but then when I buy wide screen it cuts top and bottom off. This happened to my old TV too but I didn't think anything of it cause it was cheap. But this one was a couple of grand. And blu ray movies aren't they only wide screen?

Zero I would like it if you would chime in.

For my tv, there is an option on the remote that you press a button and it can:

A) Have a 4:3 aspect ratio with black boxes on the left and right
B) Have a 16:9 aspect ratio with the picture stretched out
C) Have a 16:9 aspect ratio with the picture zoomed with some of the top and bottom of the picture cut off

Maybe your remote has this option?
Maybe there is a setting on your ps3 to make it full screen?

I have no idea. I have yet to watch blue-ray on my ps3. I am just brainstorming. I hope I could help.

Sorry, I don't know what could be wrong, considering I don't watch that many Blu-ray movies.

But...it could be a TV issue. A lot of TVs have picture settings as Normal, Stretch, Zoom, etc etc. Make sure that is set to normal, or whatever your TV may have. Just try and play around with that.

sometimes, it all depends on the copy of the movie itself...

I had the same issue with HD-DVDs (stop laughing!). When using DVDs, my TV let me stretch the image to fill the screen because I hate the black borders too. I have a widescreen TV after all. But HD-DVDs just plain won't let me do it. The hardware wouldn't stretch it, and the TV refused to do it too. It's like the disc/hardware is somehow coded to refuse to allow any distortion of the image or something. I can only assume it's the same for Blu-Ray as I've yet to play a Blu-Ray disc on my PS3.

You should check the aspect ratio of your movie, though. 1.85:1 is pretty much 'TV widescreen' and will fill your screen natively. 2.35:1 is more or less 'cinema widescreen' and will result in black bars.

Hmm, I had a similar issue the other night. I popped in a standard DVD (The Ramones documentary End of the Century, look into it), and the PS3 played it in a funky manner:

The PS3 upscaled the DVD quite well, but I couldn't understand why it didn't make the picture as big as possible. The DVD wasn't widescreen, that part I got, but there was a lot of empty screen area at the top and bottom.

I'm not sure the PS3 can play anything if full screen on big screen tvs. I have one and Blu Rays and regular DVDs have black bars on either the top and bottom or the sides, depending on the settings. I'm not sure about regular Blu Ray players though, because I don't have one.
