My friend also had this problem about a month ago. He called xbox and they said that they have never heard of the 360 doing that. They told him that they would fix it for free but it would take about 2-2.5 months for them to fix it and get it back to him. I have had my xbox for over 2 years now and i still haven't had any problems with it. I have mine laying down with the Nyco innercooler. My friend had his standing up, but i don't think it matters what way you set up your console.

It dosen't matter what way you lay your system it can be set up whatever way you want. But if it is scratching your games that bad it sounds like it is something wrong with the xbox.

I'm pretty sure games get scratched up more if you have the 360 standing up.

Not according to microsoft. I e-mailed them a while back asking them what way would reduce scratch marks. They e-mailed me back saying it can be put anyway you like, and scratches can happen either way. I wish i still had the e-mail.

That's not true. When you stand it up, it puts the disk tray slightly off track, which means the disk is wobbling as it spins.

Example;

Not too long ago, I put a brand new CD into my 360 while it was laying flat, I took it out when I was done, it was still like new, then about a week later, after standing my 360 up, I put the disk in, played it like regular, but when I took it out it was covered with scratches(nothing serious, just 3 or 4).

Another;

My GRAW2 disk got "the ring" from my 360 standing up..

I've yet to have anything scratched while my 360 has been down.

I'm afraid to stand mine up. The fear of knocking it over while playing a game and ruining not only the game but the entire system is what has kept me from doing so. I do keep it propped up on all 4 corners so it gets airflow underneath, and I feel it's a fair trade-off.

FWIW, my CoD4 disk somehow got scratched with the 360 laying horizontally, and I can no longer play Downpour online. Just won't load for me, and I get an error saying the disk cannot be read.

The two game it happened to, are they games you play heavily?

This is just a guess, but extended play would cause the disks to get very warm. Some plastics get brittle over time if they're exposed to heat. The center of the disk where you're seeing the cracking, is the part of the disk that bears the most stress as it's held while spinning. So add all of those things up, and it could explain the result.
