I always wondered that myself. And finally, last time I talked to Microsoft Customer Service I got the answer. They want you to plug it right in, because it already has a built in surge protector. Normally, I would say anything said by customer service is probably not true, but the guy I was talking to, actually knew what he was talking about, from what I gathered anyway.
