It's really difficult right now, their console is not doing too well, and I'm sure they're having trouble deciding what to do next. On top of that, they're suffering from steep financial losses. I think the PS3 coming in different sizes is part mismanagement, part recovery attempt, and we should be patient until Sony finds a stable spot in the market for PS3.
Besides, choices are always good.

Yeah, they want us to buy their different product, per example they want us to play their PS3 games, hence they remove the compatibility engine. They didn't do it with the PS2. Why not simply drop the price of 1 model for like 300$, then everyone is happy and Sony will gain much more money.

Just dropping the price of a model won't make Sony gain money. People wanted a lower price tag, and Sony gave them that with the consequences of some things removed.

Sony keeps listening to the fans. They want lower prices, and they want PS3 games. Sony did what they had to do to get the price down to a reasonable point to where a lot of people can afford it. The console really is NOT doing bad. Sony sold more PS3s in the first year compared to the 360's first year. Now, lets think about that. For the first year, the 360 had NO competition, but the PS3 since day one of release had to compete with the 360 and Wii but somehow sold more? The PS3 is on the same track as the PS2 at the moment. Relatively slow sales at the start, but if you look at the 08 lineup, sales will go crazy. Also, don't forget that Sony had the largest fanbase last year, so I could imagine there are a LOT of people waiting for that certain time to pick up a PS3. As for financial losses, every company deals with them with the release of a new system (Except Nintendo with the Wii). The gaming industry is long-term, and won't produce profits right off the bat. But their financial losses havn't been that steep, and they are actually starting to make, or atleast close to it, money off of the PS3 at this point. If you want steep financial losses, say hello to xbox 360. The Wii has been in the positive ever since it was released. While last gen was a pretty big spread in terms of sales, about 120-30-30 (millions), with PS2 blowing everything else out of the water, this gen it will defenitely be a lot closer, and all 3 systems will be pretty successful, but you can't count the PS3 out THIS early. We got a ways to go.

Well, PS3 has started to do several different SKUs, but to my knowledge I think the 40 gig and 80 gig are the last 2 for a long time. But what I like about the PS3 skus is that there are not that big of differences but you still get a wide range of prices to chose from.
360 Core- No HDD
360 Premium- 20 gig harddrive
360 Elite- HDMI 120 gig harddrive
Halo 3 360- Is just plain ugly
Future 360 (this is true)- 360 w/ built in HD-DVD player
The biggest thing that hurt MS was the lack of HDD in the Core, now developers can't use it for games. HDMI made some people mad but not as much. Now they are planning on putting in the HD-DVD into the 360 for movies. Yah, good job MS, put the losing format in there! >_>

When I first heard of the 40GB being made, I figured I'd get that. However, I could get an 80GB with Motorstorm for only 100 bucks more, so I'm not sure what to do just yet. I would probably sell Motorstorm anyway. Plus, i was thinking of getting it at Target and applying for a card which would give me 10% off my purchase, so if I sold Motorstorm, I would have an 80GB for about the same price as the 40GB.

You're wrong. Removing the BC made an insignificant difference in the price of the unit. The real reason they removed BC is to force people to buy more PS3 games and to encourage developers by creating a "PS3 game only" market.
To be clear, removing the EE did help them cut costs, but for a very small amount more they could have included the 80gb style software emulation.

The 60 gb is the best.
The 40gb has no backwards compatibility with PS2 games and the 80 is only backward compatible with 72% of PS2 games.

40 gig can't play PS2 games, but the 80 gig can play most PS2/PS1 games. Although I heard around 80%.
