Sony's way of cutting costs...
(Sorry for lengthy title)

I was reading one of the gaming mags readers response section (Or what ever they call it) it the guy wrote in on how Sony is dumping backwords compatibility on the European PS3 launch and is soon to follow when they start making more for North America.

Get you PS3 now while you can (Or if you got the money), cause one day (Rather soon?) you won't be able to play Socom:CA on your brand new PS3.

Feel free to discuss

They're not dumping it completely, they're just lowering the library of games that work (from last gen).

The last list of working games I saw, it said that there were 1200+ playable games from PS2/PS1, more than likely all the popular ones.

But the part about future PS3's being this way is true.

Anyway, the main points are these:

1) Only 1200+ PS2/PS1 games will work with the new PS3's.

2) Old PS3's will still have full backwards compatability.

3) Socom should work since it's a big Sony game, and I'm pretty sure they're not going to allow big games to not work.

Sounds like a good idea on Sony's part... I guess now Microsoft doesn't seem so foolish when they initially cut down on backwards compatibility for their Xbox 360.

I think it's a good idea on Sony's part, personally...

Backwards compatibility, is that all? I thought they were going to take out one of the two hamsters that are running on wheels inside that thing. That would really bring down your megahurtz.

The reason they are limiting it is because sony eventually wants all of those old time games like Crash Bandicoot and Driver will be downloadable content.(although we all know how sony is with the downloadable content...) I saw this on that show on spike. That nerdy guy was talking to sony's chief designer for the ps3. I think its a good idea. He also said they were doing this because of all the ps1 games that came out in Japan that we never got to play. They will be on there too. But I doubt it will be a big craze.

In Sony's defense, it's not really a decision made by them as far as when downloadable content is released... it all depends on the developer of the downloadable content.

Nine times out of ten, Sony is technically at the mercy of the developer...

dont understand why its important
we have our ps2's to play the ps2 games like socom etc. So why do we need to play them on our ps3. Im pretty sure they dont look better if you play them on the ps3. I won't buy the ps3 now because im not that lazy that i can't be bothered having to change consoles for a couple of classic ps2 games. The price will drop soon anyway. Every year, the price of the ps2 sank quite significantly. Almost halved in two years?

Not everybody wants a **** load of systems on their entertainment center. Not everyone works like that man. I want one system for my PS games, one for my X-box games. I don't want a PS2, PS3, X-Box, 360 all sitting around. That would take up wayyyy to much space and such.

BTW, the PS3 does make PS2 games look better.

Thanks for saying what I wanted to say in response to that post earlier today... but that might have turned into a profanity-laced tirade, so I refrained.

And I can see how the PS3 might help make the PS2 games look better... after all, the PS2 did the same kind of thing for quite a few of the older PS1 games back in the day.
