But just yesterday I found out that playstation online is FREE. With the current price of PS2s I wanna' play but what do I need to connect. I also read that some games require a hard drive but I just wanna play the SOCOM series, what do I need.

An ethernet cable and high speed internet. No hard drive required.

I'm not sure, but I think that Xbox requires a cross-over cable but the PS2 doesn't so you may need a different cable than the one you use for you Xbox.

In "response" to this post... you can indeed hook a regular old CAT-5 cable directly to the back of an (original) Xbox. Same situation with the Xbox 360. That's what I did with mine in the past, anyway.

Perhaps this is why I shouldn't repeat everything I hear. :p

If you have a spare ethernet port on your modem/router then just plug the PS2 into that via a CAT5 cable. Oh, and you will need a network adapter if you have a large PS2, but I doubt you will if you're buying brand new because they only sell slimlines now.

Yep, if you have a router. Just plug the cable you use for X-Box online, into the back of your playstation. Like they all said, if your jusy buying, then the internet is built in.

However, going farther than this. I would also reccommond a headset, which sells for about 30 bucks at your local gaming store. A wireless controller is also nice, as it eliminates a cord that runs to you. A USB flashdrive would also be nice, as you can play the new map packs. Although the new maps are nice, if you dont want to get them, it will not ruin the gameplay of SOCOM III.
