The Official PS2 repair thread
Ok, my PS2 keeps on giving me disk read errors when ever I try to play a game, It never lets me play just always gives me a disk read error. Does anyone have any suggestons on how to fix this? I have already called sony and they told me to send it in for a factory refurbished one for $45 or a repair for $60. I have already cleaned and reset my laser position, as my PS2 does not usually read the disk, now it does but i get the disk read error!

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED!

I have sent my PS2 back to sony now 4 times in total. The second time, which was a real emergency (unlike the first time which was out of the box errors) they were very good to me. They kept the PS2 for about a month and completely fixed it free of charge. In this period they found 14 errors never before seen in any PS2 which was tested for integrity or from personal use and they repaired it. I was very excited.

Point is first three times they took care of me. Fourth time they went out of there way to get me a discount and also gave be a brand new PS2 (refurbished but still never before used). This was great since no store sold the now discountinued "larger" PS2 new. I now have a brand new "larger" PS2 of the same version as my old one (which was the first model and best model made). I also have a new warranty on it. Ofcourse some of this is due to my people skills, but I am sure they will do the same for you.

I say send it in and get a refurbished one. It is factory sealed and right from sony themselves (not just some used one a store guarantees or some ********).

My ps2 won't read the discs, it makes a loud skipping noise and doesn't read the discs!

You're now at phase one of fixing your PS2 yourself without having to wait 6-8 weeks for it to be replaced by Sony.

WARNING! VOIDS WARRANTY! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION!

WARNING! TYPICAL RESULTS MAY VARY! POSSIBLE CHANCE THE OPERATION WILL NOT WORK!

First, we want to establish tools needed:

1) A very small Philips Head Screwdriver.
2) A pencil.
3) A few Q-tips
4) A small vacuum cleaner, or a gentle hand with a barely moist paper towel.
5) A bottle of FDA Approved Rubbing Alcohol.

Next, we need to point you to your warranty if you haven't figured out what it is:

The warrenty is the 1 inch by 3 inch black tape that reads,
Quote:
WARRaNTY SEAL
WARRENTY VOID IF THIS SEAL ON THE Playstation 2 CONSOLE IS BROKEN.
Now the fun begins :

Break that blasted seal!
WARNING! VOIDS WARRaNTY! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION!
On the bottom of the PS2, there are 4 rubber 'feet' and 4 plastic square pads. Pull them off and put them to the side.
Take your screwdriver and unscrew all 8 screws.
~Note~ Remember which screw goes where ~Note~
Now, lift the cover and pull towards you over the memory card, controller slot.
~Note~ Take care NOT TO RIP the power ribbon. I ripped it and had to buy a completely new PS2... ~Note~
You now see a miniture version of hell. Take the vacuum/towel and clean out all the dust in the air vent and silver slits.
Next, use the small screwdriver and unscrew the cover for the disc tray. Set it to the side.
Now, take your rubbing alcohol and Q-tips and clean the lens by dipping the tip of the Q-tip into the container of the rubbing alcohol. Do not get it dripping wet.

You have just performed a simple maintenance session of your PS2. Test to see if this possibly was the problem. How to Test:

Replace the cover to the disc tray only and push down gently to keep in in place. You don't have to put the main cover of the PS2 on. Turn on, put game in and try.

If it still doesn't work...:

We move to the technical part of the operation.
Remove the disc tray cover and look near the lens.
You should see a small white pronged disc-wheel.
~Note~What this disc does, is that it raises and lowers the distance between the CD and the lens. You can see for yourself AFTER the next step~Note~
Make a perpendicular mark on the disc.
Special Step A-Now, rotate the disc three clicks clockwise to the right.
Special Step B-Test it (use procedure shown above).
Continue to do Special Step A and Special Step B until it works.

WARNING, IF YOU FOLLOWED MY OPERATION STEP BY STEP AND DID NOT GET SUCCESSFUL RESULTS, PLEASE NOTE THAT I WARNED YOU PRIOR TO THE OPERATION THAT THERE IS A CHANCE IT WILL NOT WORK. I WILL NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE

Now... if you get the message, "Cannot Read Disc", you have a motherboard problem. This can only be replaceable by Sony. Call the number and send it in.

This has been a Cheesy Production. All Rights Reserved. Warnings has been posted. Will not be held accountable for failures. 'Disc Read Error operation' should only be used if the owner does not feel like sending in the said gaming consol into Sony. Use in only dire to extreme cases. Feel free to PM Cheesy for questions or Comments.

I actually advise you do not break the seal and open the PS2. You lose your chances at a refurbished replacement for $45 and will have to buy a completely new PS2. They don't make the larger PS2 anymore so that will not be a pleasant venture. Just send it in to Sony. Trust me on that one.
