Photoshop - Quick Mask Mode

Okay, I'm currently taking a class on Photoshop/Illustrator. I haven't got to Illustrator yet, but I recently learned about the quick mask mode in Photshop. It's very easy to use and can be quite useful. I am having one problem, however, at home -- when I make a highlight via brush while in quick mask mode, then click on the button again to exit said mode, my selection ends up being the entire image and not what I highlighted.

This happened to my instructor, but she got it working on another PC. I am guessing that the problem is a certain option within the program (or maybe I'm completely wrong). Does anyone know how to fix this problem so that it selects what I highlight instead of the entire image? Thanks in advance.

She didn't know what was wrong. It just happened to work at a different PC.

When you highlight something in quickmask mode, and then exit the mode, everything except what you highlighted will be selected. All you have to do then is a CTRL+SHIFT+I to inverse the selection, and there you go.

That's how it's supposed to work, but the problem is that when I highlight something, it just selects the entire canvas. I don't know why it does this, and I'd love to know how to fix it. I don't know if it's some sort of strange option or a layer thing...

I found the problem, and it was so minor; I am surprised I did not notice it sooner. My brush had a low opacity level while I was in quick mask mode, so whatever I highlighted wasn't really there. That's all...

Well, finally got it working, so all is well.
