First you need to add a transparency layer. Open the image, then go to: Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel. What this does is add a transparency layer behind the image, so when you cut it, it's not white, it's transparent.
For the actual cutting, here's a tut that will tell you, I do it this way as well, they just better explain it.

Nice tut JakkyD. I seen that a while ago but never used it. GIMPtalk is probarbly the best place to go for tutorials for GIMP. GIMPbattledome is also good but I'm not sure if it still around. Wheres the "I love Superstar" Mini-Sig?
