what would make a good background? like does it have to have the same colors as the render or what?

Make it match the render, give it depth, don't make it plain. And don't rip any pre-mad BGs

Create a new layer over you're backround but under you're rendre(s) and set it to soft light. Do some black brushing. Create a new layer and set it to overlay, do some white brushing. Reapeat if necesary.
