Players that pick a sniper rifle, and camp the same spot round after round, are not snipers...
Everyone on S2 that seems to think they are sniping goes to one place they think has a good vantage point, and tries to pick off a guy or two...
Movement, stealth, distance, accuracy, patience, and scouting.. these things are what makes a good sniper.
If you kill a guy or two, move! You are either spotted now, or most likely have taken down anyone who will be coming in your line of fire.
When using the sniper rifle, stay concealed.. lay prone, use windows, use the cover of crates, trees, rocks, brush... anything to stay out of enemy sight. Practice the skills that will allow you to navigate the map as quickly as possible, jumping over barriers, climbing walls, getting on roofs, diving behind cover..
To help keep your self alive, and also to help stay concealed use distance to your advantage.. After all this is why you picked the gun you did, because you can deliver shots from much farther then the average assault rifle, or SMG. Do not run to the middle of the map at the beginning of the round, or up the right where you will likely encounter enemies quickly, or to a building that will likely be surrounded within 1 minute of the round starting. Think where the enemies will be coming from, and find the position furthest from it that will still allow you to deliver shots onto the area.
Being profficient with the rifle is of the utmost importance... Practice hitting targets, that are both moving and standing still. It requires time and patience to become accurate with the sniper rifle if you want to become consistent with it.
Patience, and Scouting are two more vital characteristics of a good sniper.. Know when to take a shot, and when not to. If you see three enemies running towards you, Notify your teammates of their whereabouts, and either conceal yourself, or relocate to a better vantage that will allow you another chance at taking them down. Even an accurate sniper would perhaps be only be able to kill one or at best two moving targets, and by doing so would give away his position. On the other hand, if the targets are running away, then fire at will.. they wont be able to see you shooting, and this will confuse them. Be sure to notify your teammates in this case as well. Optimal times to snipe are when an enemy is crouched down far away from you, motionless, perhaps reloading, or looking for targets or using his headset. Take these targets down.
Practice these elements which are the things real snipers do in real war, and you will see there is a reason why they do things the way they do... and that these same things also apply to socom 2.
Hope this helps :D
