On a path reserved entirely for walkers and runners music is fine. But if there is traffic of any kind in your vicinity you should be listening. Cars cross footpaths to get into driveways and you will intersect them at junctions. If you trust every guy pulling into his garage at the end of a long day, and you don't mind stopping to take account of the traffic at every single intersection you hit, then music is fair enough.
My run this morning was one mile along a footpath before that ran out, then six miles running on the road itself (at the side, smartass) and six and a half in a forest park full of mountainbikers using my paths. Over 90% of the time there was a chance of cars and bikes passing very close to me, and I don't trust those ****ers to overtake me safely on their own. At the very least I need to be aware of their presence, which I would not be with music playing.
It all depends on where you run, but if you are even half serious about it and run often enough you are at risk. Its a small risk, but when its your body and nothing else on the recieving end of any accidents that may occur (mind you that a broken leg and a broken neck are equally traumatic to a decent runner) safety should be a priority.

If you have common sense, running with music is fine.
I'm like you, Hcky, I can't run without it.

Running with music is like walking with a bunch of friends. I know when you walking with friends you're pretty much oblivious to anything around you except your friends and the conversation your having with them. I understand that if a circumstance comes up, you would be able to hear a car coming, or a biker nearing you from behind.
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't have my headphones turned up to the point my ears are bleeding after my run, although I do have them loud enough to block any distractions. Like Scuba said, if you have common sense, then your fine. Plus when I'm listening to music I'm still focused on the road to my side, and my path ahead of me, the music is there to motivate me and keep me going.

Absolutely. Safety is always my utmost priority, and I don't feel like listening to music is putting me in any type of danger.

I totally forgot about Rage. Some of their songs are alright, but a few of them I can't stand. I've been getting more and more into Seether as well. "Fake it" and "Rise above this" are some kick *** songs.

When I'm at the gym only one band will cut it:
PROTEST THE HERO

That's why whenever I do run or bike I go to JB Starkey Wilderness Park down the road that has special trails for bikes and joggers. It's a nice nature trail and you get to see , alligators , deer, tortoises , snakes and **** like that. There's too many distractions in town with traffic that slow down your pace.

Since your joining up get used to the c-130 running cadence, you will run to that more then you want to lol, and you want to practice your keeping in step before you go now. Or you DI will drop you quick.
