Turf Toe is when you sprain the ligaments connecting your toe to the foot. This is caused when you push down very very hard on your toes causing hyperextention, when you have a lot of pressure on your calf or back leg causing force on the toe, or rarely stubbing your toe from stopping suddenly as if you're running. Spraining you're toe is actually very easy to do especially in football and baseball with the sudden stops.
It is technically called a Metatarsalphalangeal joint sprain.
In this guy's case though it was definitely a break due to the swelling he described. I'm sure he's fine now though.
Man it's nice to take classes in Sports Medicine.
