I drink one in the morning, and then one right after a work out, and then right before I go to bed. On the days that I don't work out, I drink the one in the middle of the day - always three times a day. Here's why:
The only time your muscles actually build is during sleep, and muscles completely rely on protein to build. Therein, this merits drinking one before you sleep. This way your muscles will have something to feed off of. During your sleep cycle your protein levels diminish, and you need to replenish that. This is why I drink one after I wake up. And then after a work out, all of your muscles are completey screaming for protein. (I don't see why you would need to drink one before you work out - of course, there'd be no harm in that.)
Hope this helps! ^.^
(Oh, and to answer your original question, I wouldn't reccommend wasting your time on protein bars. They're way too expensive for how much protein they actually contain.)
