Call me crazy but in all honesty,
Experiencing the shittiest life possible, killing, being as badass as possible, and mix that with a tad bit of patriotism (dunno either if its a word). Yeah college funding is great and all but I wanna be out there, I wanna be in The ****, I wanna experience Iraq.
And hell yes I'll haunt you.
"Patriotism" IS a word~erg

Please, really think about this. To inform you what will happen, you'll sign up, and three weeks later be out to basic training, and then you have about a 95% chance of immediately being shipped to Iraq/Afghanistan(yes we still occupy Afghanistan). Also, note the past three months have been the deadliest since the Iraq war began. If you wanna get some perspective pick up the new copy of Rolling Stone. It is a hard thing to do, you will be shooting people, you will be running over dead bodies of woman/children, yes, I said children. You may be given an order to shoot children. IED's (enough said), the list can go on and on. These are all things you have to consider nowadays. Its not the physical strain thats going to haunt you the rest of your days.

Okay, I've been in military programs since I was 12. Went through our cute little simulated 2-week boot camp, I've went through various trainings, shot plenty of guns, and met some amazing people. I've met all kinds of soldiers and sailors and the most badass of badass. My brother is 25 and a lot of his friends enlisted right out of high school, I get a lot of stories from them too. I've seen movies, read books, and know what I need to know. I know what's gonna happen. And I'm ready for it all

Zech.
I'm not trying to say anything bad about you, just keep that in mind.
However, no one is ever ready for the things you can/might (because some MOS's allow you to experience more than some) see/do in the military. You'll think you're ready to shoot a kid, or ready to shoot whatever stops you from completing your mission; but you'll hesitate when it comes down to it. I honestly don't think that when I join the Marines if I see a situation that calls for me to shoot whatever poses a threat to my unit, that I'll be able to pull the trigger without a second thought. Maybe the second, or the third, but that first time'll have me rethinking my entire being.
Again, I'm not coming down on you, I just don't think you're ready for some of the things that can happen. You're ready for some.... But not most of it.
Then again, I could be entirely wrong, and you're a psychopath... Who knows?

this is not meant to offend anyone. If you're a fighter pilot, in the navy/air arm you probably won't hesitate dropping a bomb or two. You won't be scared because your miles away from the action and you won't think twice. It's probably not as scary being in the airforce/navy in the USA because all the enemies are insurgents, none have enemy planes or ships that can kill you. But being a soldier is hard since you have to experience everything first hand. Training is just that, training. You don't get to see dead bodies, every practise is controlled - there is no danger. But in real war, everything is chaotic. Unlike training, people shoot AT you. You don't know if a kid approaching you for a handshake might have bombs strapped to himself. In a way this is more dangerous, you never know if someone is a suicide bomber. If you are in a humvee (not driving), nothing is in your hands. If a rocket hits you from nowhere, you can die. If your truck drives over a hidden mine, you can die. If you drive past a van full of explosives you can die. Urban warfare must be scary stuff. I mean think of it in gaming terms. If your enemy is miles awa, with stealth you can take them out. But in cities, you raid houses. You have a high chance of dying because a grenade might pop out, or a random person who is 'camping'/hiding in the last place you would check, you are likely to hurt yourself. But this is your choice. Maybe you are geared up for war, but i certainly am not

You're right, you can never really be ready to kill a person until the time comes and you have to make a decision. I was wrong to say I'm ready for it all, it was just to prove a point. Point maybe being that I am a psychopath but hopefully not.

Nowadays, we have weapons that can hit things in the air.
