Wow..
Ive had this exact same problem all my life (Im 23..). Ironically for myself it started when I would inline skate (same exact leg motion you would use when you skate in ice hockey)
The leg locks up and the knee literately feels as if its being swivled out of place to the side. For myself, its a horrible and painfull feeling. Instantly your forced to unlock the knee and "pop" it back into place. believe me, its painfull.. Afterwards the knee, more importantly the leg, is useless for a couple of days. Maybe my case is a little more severe than yours, who knows..
In any case, the problem would then occur when I would sit "indian style". In resting position the knee is fine, but when you pull your leg out of the indian style bent position the knee pops out of joint and the fiasco happens all over again.. It then graduated to your regular everyday upright chair seating position (ie. school desk) but mainly only occured when the leg was positioned slightly to the side, and it always happens when you pull your leg out of the position. The last time it happened I was just sitting around chillin with some buddies playing poker. I was squeazed into a small area with my legs under the table and apparently just very slightly swivled my leg to the side and out popped my knee. Instantly I grabbed my leg and unlocked it with my hands.. poker chips and cards went flying everywhere. And of course my buddies thought I was a crack head. Ouch me knee..
To answer your question, your knees are weak. The ligaments and tendons that hold your knee in place are not strong enough to hold everything together in severe motions such as the ones you use in skating. Your knee is pushed to a certain point and then it kinda slides by your tendons. Its very painful. I went to a knee specialist in Providence RI, took many x-rays, and CAT scans, and then was essentially told that I needed to CAREFULLY excercise the knee through weightless therapy.
Now it sounds like your case isnt as bad as mine but it does sound like its the same problem. Nonetheless the problem will most likely continue unless you excercise your knee's soft tissues correctly. Get the situation handled professionally by a doctor. And keep heavy stress off of that specific knee. In the meantime, stay away from leg excercises like Squats and the Leg Press. And dont forget to stretch!!
Go to the doctor!!
