That movie is
Cloverfield.
I thought Transformers was spectacular, and easily the most enjoyable movie of the summer. It will no doubt clean house at the box office, but should definitely get that Visual Effects Oscar.
Despite changing things just for the sake of change, ignoring the history of the characters and the feelings of fans the world over, Michael Bay successfully churned out another of his classic "little to no character development, cheasy script, slow-mo 360 pan-ups" effects spectacles.
The effects, CGI, and Shia LaBeouf were all fantastic. Even some of the comedy and goofyness was great.
Sadly, there's oodles of weak spots in the script, and pointless subplots that serve no logical purpose, and bring little to no value to the story as a whole.
And before anyone starts blablablahing as they do so well about "it's a movie about toys, geared towards kids, what do you want/expect!?!?!!11!",
E.T. was made for kids and there isn't a god damned flaw with that movie's story, plot, script, et al. So suck eggs.

Having grown up on the original Transformers series, and seeing the animated movie in theaters, I'm still quite put off by the character designs of the movie.
I understand that CGI copies of the G1 characters would look kinda goofy, but could a happy medium not be found?? More than half of the robots looked like scrap metal that's been thrown into a blender.
There's a good couple of throwback moments for the older fans, like briefly seeing the Matrix of Leadership inside of Prime's chest, or Jazz breakdancing as he transforms.
I really hated how the Decepticons had nearly no dialog, and the dynamic between Megatron and Starscream gets no representation other than the single "You've failed me again, Starscream" line.
If I wanted to nitpick, I'd also scoff at the whole Allspark thing, because everyone knows that Vector Sigma gives life to Transfomers. But that's just a little nerdy.
I was very disappointed that Frank Welker was not allowed to reprise his role as Megatron. He voices him in the movie game, and does an outstanding job of bringing life and character to the tinfoil mess that the movie Megatron is. You couldn't even hear Hugo Weaving in the movie, which is a good thing, so I couldn't help but wonder why they would even pick him. The movie voice wasn't that bad though.
It's a definite that there will be a sequel. They're already putting the story together. My hope is that it consists of the remaining Autobots coming to Earth, their new safe-haven, while Starscream returns to Cybertron to report the defeat, and the Decepticons come to battle the Autobots, and revive their leader, Megatron.
I assure you, he's not dead, and Soundwave will certainly not leave him to rot at the bottom of the ocean.
