Greatest song covers
When a band or musican covers someone elses music its a pretty risky move. Some people believe that a cover is never better then the original, but I believe in some cases they are.
Heres my list of five of the greatest song covers ever:
1)
Led Zeppelin - "Led Zeppelin I" (Original - Various)
Even though this isnt one indiviual song, Led Zeppelin I is full of blues covers and other non orignal material. When the band came together after the fall of the Yardbirds they had very short time to play together because they had to fill already planned tour dates. Basically the only songs that the four could all play were old blues tunes with a few Page songs aswell. Even though each song isnt totally orignal, Zeppelin made those songs theirs and made one hell of an album.
2)
Johnny Cash - "Hurt" (Original - Nine Inch Nails)
In my opinion this is one of the greatest covers ever for a few different reasons. I love how traditonally covers are done by newer generations covering older ones, but for this song it was vice versa. While the Nine Inch Nails version is great, I think Cash brought a sense of pain and weakness that Trent Reznor couldnt channel. Even Trent Reznor now refers to it as "The song that no longer is his". In my opinion this was Cash's swan song, and one great one at that.
3)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - "Little Wing" (Original - Jimi Hendrix)
While I still like the original Little Wing the most I have nothing but respect for SRV's tremendous cover. Even though I still feel that Hendrix's version was played with the most heart and emotion, SRV came and made the song a technical masterpiece.
4)
Cream - "Crossroads" (Original - Robert Johnson "Crossroad Blues")
What Cream did was take one of the most important delta blues artists ever and cover one of his signature songs. They transformed the song from a mellow blues classic into a energetic rock song. Though Clapton has done covers of the song by himself on many occassions, in my opinion the best cover is from when he was with Cream live at the Winterland.
5)
Tool - "No Quarter" (Original - Led Zeppelin)
When it comes to Led Zeppelin covers, I have been known to be a harsh critic. Though I have never enjoyed a cover of a Zeppelin song as much as the orignal, Tool's cover of "No Quarter" would probably be the closest contender. Unlike most covers bands, Tool didn't try to exactly replicate what Zeppelin did (which is smart because no one can :) ), but rather built on the song and somewhat made it their own.
And just for fun. The worst cover ever is...
Puff Daddy - "Come With Me" (Orignal Led Zeppelin "Kashmir")
Basically Puffy took a Zeppelin classic and rapped to it while having Jimmy Page play guitar with an orchestra in the background. Page was good and the orchestra added a cool touch to the song, but Puffys rapping made absouletly not sesne, and when he tried to do the signature Robert Plant shriek he sounded like a little girl being pinched. Besides the song was for a ****** remake of good movie.
Post up what you guys feel are some of the best cover songs, and if you feel like it the worst.
