And CD's don't get scratched, snapped, or otherwise damaged?
A lot of legit websites now let you re-download music that you have downloaded legally if you lose it. It's a pain in the arse but you get there eventually.
Not to turn this into a CD Vs Download debate, but there is probably an equal number of disadvantages for both.
On-topic: I still think that YouTube is the answer to most people's music needs if they are simply listening to it on a computer. If you are sat on your computer, go to YouTube and create an account. From there you can search for whatever you want, add it to a custom playlist, and just play them all. You could have a playlist for each genre, artist, whatever you want.
You only need to keep your web browser window open while they are playing but it's a free and legal (illegal stuff is taken down quickly) way to listen to music. Because the playlist is online, you can use the playlist from wherever you can get on (and log-in to) YouTube.
