Before you get any bands under the metal genre pushed towards you, tell us what you like.

Believe it or not, there are many sub-categories of metal.

Not every metal band sounds the same. Try and give a description of what you're looking for.

I'll give you a small list of good bands (a lot of bands suck *** and wouldn't be good for someone opening up to metal). Oh, and stay away from any screamo or emo bullsh*t. It's disgusting.

Killswitch Engage
Parkway Drive
As Blood Runs Black
The Black Dahlia Murder
All That Remains
Lamb of God
As I Lay Dying
Mudvayne
Bleeding Through
Slipknot
A Dozen Furies
The Devil Wears Prada
Caliban
In Flames
It Dies Today
Haste the Day

The bands in bold have more melody than others, those would be your best bet when looking for metal.

The others are a lot heavier and I'm sure it will have to grow on you if you don't like it to start out.

Over any other band/album right now, I would suggest you download some songs from Killswitch Engage's new album, As Daylight Dies. Hit songs to check out are Daylight Dies, This Is Absolution (personal favorite), The Arms of Sorrow, and My Curse. I personally like the entire album, but I'm sure you will like the listed songs better than others.

Like I said, most metal will have to grow on you if you aren't drawn to it immediately. Start out with bands that have more melody in them, then move from there. I'm not saying any of the bands I listed are soft, but they mix melody with "we will **** your **** up" if you catch my drift.

Let me know how that goes.

HHmm...I'm about to download some and check it out.

But IDK, something that sounds like HU, and AFI and whatnot....not sure how many bands out there that do sounds like them(I'd want the HU sound more than anything).

But yeah, I'll edit later or tomorrow with me updates :D.

I would have highlighted Mudvayne instead of Bleeding Through since he's just starting out Steve. The vocal style from Bleeding Through may be too much for him at this point. As well, the vocals from AILD are an acquired taste IMO.

The new Killswitch album is great though. I have it in my car right now. The newest issue of Revolver has an interview with KSE in it.

My personal fav from Steve's list is In Flames. They may be a bit too much for you right away Writer. If you decide to try them, listen to The Quiet Place, Take This Life or Cloud Connected.

The best starter band for this genre is definitely Bullet for My Valentine. Half of their songs are hardcore screaming and the other half are simply orgasmic. The orgasmic ones that should sort of give you a good feeling about this genre are Tears Don't Fall (of course), Hand of Blood, Curses, and also Just Another Star. Those you should definitey like.

Alexisonfire is another good band. Fantastic song I am obsessed with right now off their new album is This Could be Anywhere in the World.

Yeah I was going to say basically the same thing as Pre. BFMV has nice clean vox and their "screams" are really more just harsh singing. And they're very talented.

Alexisonfire...check out: No Transitory, This could be anywhere in the world, Control, Accidents

Those are their popular ones....

I still say Underoath would be a good starting ground. For "screamo" underoath, dl They're Only Chasing Safety (it's an album), their most notable song(s) being: Reinventing your exit, It's dangerous business walking out your front door

If you want more "hardcore" underoath, dl their new album: Define the great line. Their best being Writing on the walls. This album has more growling and hardcore aspects than screamo, but it still has Aaron softly singing in all songs, and their songs are a little longer. You could, of course, dl Underoath's old stuff, but IMO the lead singer sucks **** so I'm not reccomending it! Yeah, take that punx.

You may also want to try From Autumn To Ashes, they're a good "starting" band IMO, them, Killswitch Engage, A day to remember, Avenged Sevenfold, The Bled, Behind Crimson Eyes, Chiodos, Dead Poetic, Escape The Fate <---really good starting band, and maybe some Senses Fail

Those are all the bands that got me into more harder ****.

Some good bands for getting into Screamo/Metalcore IMO would be..

UnderOATH
As Cities Burn
BlesstheFall
Madison Apart <--Good screamo band, they're a band that lives like..2miles away from me to :D
Blinded Black
My Hero Is Me
Glory of This
Atreyu

Now the harder stuff(Or at least a little harder)
Norma Jean
August Burns Red
As I lay Dying(sp?)
Inhale Exhale
All That Remains <--Not too hard, more like melodic metal
The number 12 looks like you <--Mathcore, hardest genre to play, EVER.
Haste the Day
The Black Dahila Murder (sp?)
The Devil Wears Prada
I Killed The Prom Queen
Every Time I Die
Killswitch Engage
As Blood Runs Black

Now I'm gonna go find soem more, BRB(I can't remember half of them ATM)

Just a few bands that IMOPare good to listen to if your just no getting into the genre(And everyone was posting list so why shouldn't I? :P) They all also have some nice screamo/hardcore/metal songs.

As blood runs black might be a little too much to start off...I wouldn't reccomend starting off with deathcore if you wanna get into screamo

Since you really didnt specify what kind of meatal you were looking for I thought I would post some of the older metal bands that I love and some of their better/more popular songs.

Iron Maiden (Heavy Metal)
-Aces High
-Paschendale
-The Trooper

Black Sabbath (Pre Metal/Doom Metal)
-N.I.B
-Children of the Grave
-Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Metallica (Thrash Metal)
-Master of Puppets
-Seek and Destroy
-One

Some other bands to look into:
-Guns and Roses
-Megadeth
-Pantera
-Slayer

I know some people on these boards dont consider these bands metal, but I do and thats what most people believe so I thought I would post them.

I'd suggest Purevolume prior to DL...just saves you time and effort.
