I think we can all pretty much describe ourselves as veteran or 'hardcore' gamers here, if you like. Do you think that as such, we have lower standards than the rest of the 'casual' game buying world? I think I do. I mean, I usually always seem to be able to find some glimmer of hope, and appreciate most games on some level, even if they are completely average. It's pretty rare that I get hold of a game and think to myself 'man, this bucket of crap is so bad, it's not even worth my time'.

For example, if there's a bit of a drought, I'll happily buy a couple of average or even very badly rated games if I think I could get something out of them. Sometimes, I'm pretty glad I do, because I occasionally find a gem that I wouldn't have otherwise bothered with because the world has told me to avoid it. Eat Lead for example, was pretty much universally derided, but I had an absolute blast playing it - certainly not the best game ever, but damn, it was so much fun! The latest Destroy All Humans is another - again, not the best, but I really liked it. More often than not, of course, a crap or average rated game is just that, but if it is really just average and there's nothing terribly game-breaking then I'll quite happily see it through to the end.

To be honest, I think we need average and crap games, because playing through them can be good when there's no AAA titles to be found, and it also makes me appreciate the great games a lot more. I think if every game I played was an Oblivion or an inFamous or an Overlord, I'd get - well, not bored - but I don't think I'd appreciate them as much as I do now.

Discuss.

Well, if you go by the theory that the universe and everything in it functions via balance, then yes we need games that fill the voids underneath "Amazing". If everything was amazing, eventually our standards would get so high that satisfaction would be impossible.

Personally, I love the Warriors series (Dynasty, Samurai, Orochi) but they're shit games. The quality is really low and the game play is repetitive and the sounds are just laughable. Yet, I love it. It's a great way to kill time and let off steam by laying waste to thousands of enemies in only a few minutes.

Years ago I would buy pirated software, 3 games for a tenner, every weekend. I could afford to buy crap, and often did, and sometimes I would play the hell out of it. One game I loved was made by JVC who very quickly went back to making video recorders.

The king of crap was 3DO. Army Men! They made a game called Army Men: Land, Sea, Air. I couldn't believe the negative reviews it got... parachuting into battle, shooting plastic shards off the enemy, manning the guns on a bomber, boats, large multiplayer maps on which you could plan your assault or defence... I lapped it up.

With the cost of games these days, I don't even rent a game unless there is a very good chance it'll be pretty damn good. The only exceptions are the cheap PC games I buy every so often... I buy crap sometimes. I got a game called "Cold War Conflicts"... some parts weren't translated from Russian, some missions were probably impossible to complete, the helicopters just took off and fired their rockets in a big circle of death in the middle of your base... but I could cope with these flaws and many others too. I really liked that game.

Wasn't that the one with the green plastic army men? I think I remember playing one of those. It wasn't so bad.

The Army Men games were very good, but the best series of them, the "World War" series, doesn't even have its own page on Wikipedia. Four games and not a single page, just a mention on the general Army Men. Thats how badly they were recieved. I remember one of Army Men title, which I played and liked but didn't quite adore, got 17% in a review.

Does that not resemble a 2000, PS1 version of SOCOM to you?

Complete Letdowns

Everyone has bought a game expecting it to be amazing and happily allow it to consume the next 2 weeks of their life... just to get it home and find out it's absolute garbage... Some examples:

Chrono Cross
Legend of Mana
Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter
Final Fantasy XII
Every Monster Rancher game after MR2

I had to refrain from mashing on the keyboard after typing each and every one of those stupid games. Anybody else got something they need off their chest?

Booooooo. Chrono Cross and FF12 were great in my book.

But Legend of Mana? Oh my god what trash.

The only game I can think of right now that was just complete trash (worst game I've ever bought) was Two Worlds.

As someone who loved Destroy All Humans!, I was thoroughly dissapointed by its sequel. The December 06 issue of PlayStation Magazine came with a demo, and I knew just from that short amount of gameplay that DAH2 was going to be a major letdown. But, I played the full version anyways... I was so disheartened, I never bothered to try the other three sequels (if Crypto Does Vegas counts as a sequel).
Now if we're just talking about any garbage game, I find it hard to argue that Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis was the worst game ever. But I doubt this was really a letdown outside the diehard Aquaman fanbase...

I try to avoid games that are geared towards movies, super heroes, tv shows, etc. seems like most of them fail.

Oh and Chrono Cross was good... it just wasn't Chrono Trigger good. I didn't feel like it had good enough character depth, nor did the last boss have nearly enough (or rather, any) buildup. I didn't beat him and then lean back in my chair and congratulate myself. Instead I leaned back in my chair and thought to myself, "Was that really the last boss?"

Also adding to my list of letdowns::::

Megaman X (AFTER they went 3d... I think it was X7)

Star Ocean: The Last Hope (this would be a GREAT game for you if you like 5 minutes of easy gameplay split up by 45 minute long cut scenes)

My list of letdowns would be...

Yoshi Touch 'n' Go - I thought it was an adventure game, but it's really not.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World - Some things are far too different from the first installment. I've only played like two hours though.

And that's all.

Have you only played 50 minutes of the game? There is way more exploration and fighting than cutscenes, and they are nowhere NEAR 45 minutes.

I have to disagree on both counts. Megaman X was one of my favorite games back then. I liked that story more than the original Megaman games. However, I will agree with you in saying that the X series went down after the original.

As for Star Ocean, one of it's good points are the long cut-scenes. Sort of like how MGS3 is not only awesome for the gameplay, but the cut-scenes as well. Besides, the longest one is somwhere near an hour long, and that's when you're just getting to the last world, and it's awesome enough that you don't care that it's so long. I will say that it could've been better. They could've (and should've) made it possible for you to travel between worlds without having to change discs. They should've had more enemy designs, rather than just changing the name, color, and minisculre features on current ones and calling it good.

2 weeks of your life? I want a game to consume a lot more time then that especally with the lengths and online plays of games today..

Well for starters... Socom 3 was my biggest let down along with the rest of the socom series after that. Not much of a game but the Ps3 was a let down for me don't get me wrong I love it, it's just upsetting that probably 5 of my friends own the system..

Absolutely. I played Socom since release of the first one, with little other games in between (when 1 and 2 actually got old and boring (which took long)). But Socom 3 really figured out the trick to ruining a great series.

Two Worlds was probably the biggest game letdown in history for me. I expected so much, and got so little :(
