Yea max is 50. My x box 360 I only had about 20 friends. I don't really think theres a max on there.

99 is the max on Live.

I guess there are bootleg ways to get more, I remember reading something along the lines of using MSN messenger to have more people on..I don't think you can see what they're playing though, and it's nothing like the normal Live friends list.

And with the recent update where you can see friends of friends, people have made new accounts just for that purpose..no one plays on them, they just use it to have more friends on their list.
