Yes, the character, regardless of what TYPE of weapons he had, was acting as the role of a sniper. You don't need to have a sniper rifle to be a sniper.
By the way, why isn't there a thread on this game?

His rifle was a modified M14. An M14 is not a assault rifle firing an intermediate cartridge but, a battle rifle firing a full power cartridge, making it useful for long range shooting. Variants of the M14 such as the M21 modified for precision shooting, are used in Iraq by US marksmen.

M14 is not a sniper rifle or assault rifle imo. And it is an opinion, because the whole issue over "assault" weapons is ******** to begin with. It's a ****ing rifle. Leave it at that.
