Yes, it is legal for you to change what network this phone will operate on. What'll be interesting is if Apple puts out a patch that nullifies the ability to do this, and the impact it will have on those that have already done it. I think they're be opening a legal pandora's box on that one, which could explain why they haven't taken any action yet.

As far as service cost, I have no idea. Of course you'd have your calling plan, but then you would also need a text plan, and a data plan.

And that's even if your carrier will recognize the iPhone on their network.

i questioned the legality of this myself. im sure at&t will try to take legal action against the guy who made the instructions public on the internet. they made a multi-million dollar deal with apple to only use the iphone on their service. im sure theyd be pissed if tons of people now are gonna be walking around with their phone on sprint or t-mobile. apple might act like they care, but theyd probably love this, since more people will buy the ipone when they learn that they can keep their service provider. at least the ones with sim cards anyway.

from what i understand, tho, its not that easy of a hack. sure people will be able to do it, but the average joe who just buys a phone and doesnt really know how to "customize" it could ruin it. then theyd be screwed with an iphone thats not hacked and at&t wont take back because its been tampered with.

kind of just goes to show the iphone isnt all that if people need all these hacks and software add-ons to make the phone cool.
