What do you mean by change in character?
Yeah, I know that any enlistment into the military is for 8 years. You do however many years active, then you do however many years remains inactive reserve. You can still get called up to serve, in the event of a major full scale war, where they'll need everyone they can get their hands on. That type of thing is right BEFORE a draft.
Active
Reserve
Inactive Reserve
Draft

Good luck to you, and God bless. I wish you all the best. One of my friends is shipping off to boot camp for the Navy on Father's Day this weekend. We had a huge send off for him last weekend. Do whatever you feel is best in terms of switching to infantry or straight into special forces, but these guys did have a point. Get some experience under your belt so the training will be easier to handle.
 (They didn't have salute).

Being yelled and ordered by G.S's daily, waking up extremely early, living by some of the most strict standards/rules in the country while at base, can change you.
And say you were deployed to Iraq...Do I even need to say it? It would change you for everything you are.

do whatever pays the most.
but dont put your life in too much danger because a lot of soldiers are dying for a bad cause nowadays.
but then again, what was the reason YOU joined the army? if it was to help people out you might wanna do stuff behind the scenes. but like if you wanted to get hands on, take the special forces.
but i dont know that much so dont listen to me.

If you do go into combat, please make a video of you doing a victory dance over a Terrorist. That would make my day.

Also be wary of glitchers and people who use lag switches. They ruin the whole war for everybody.
If being in the army truly makes you happy, then by all means do it...no matter what doubts the anti-establishment internet bulletin board administrator may have. But yeah, I do agree with veins on the part of a change in character. Please don't come back as one of those pro-war, pro-everything the government does right wings like so many other soldiers you meet. Try to keep a mind of your own, as hard as that may be.

Take your time before trying to get into special forces. If you actually do get into the elite forces within the next year or two you will be far too young. Special forces and families don't go well together at all... what if you want to settle down in a few years? Young men are a lot more likely to collapse and burn out than the guys who have been in the regular forces for seven or eight years.
If you get in any time soon you will have over a decade of active service... with the massive risk involved, four or five years in your late twenties and early thirties are enough. About a fifth of my own unit are ex-SAS, some of them very young men who fell apart, another one or two very unlucky chaps who served superbly for many years and no longer have the requisite body parts for elite forces action.
And be careful with the army. The impression that many civilians have, of the army stripping you down and rebuilding you to their own specifications, isn't far wrong. If they succeed, while you will not be the mindless drone some people make you out to be, you will be different. Only let them change the nessecery.

I didn't think that it'd have a big effect on me, because my uncle's in S.F., and he's got a wife, and 3-4 kids. I haven't even seen any problems between them. He's strong as nails, smarter than anyone I know, and runs 8 miles, and walks 12 w/ a rucksack.
You could be right, though... Well, maybe you ARE right, I don't have enough experience IN the military to know.
I thought it was the Marine Corps taht strips you down, and rebuilds you. And how do I let them "change the necessary"?

They can convince you to do things, and if you sign the papers it's over. I know the navy recruiters do **** like ask you if you like guns. If you say yes and they tell you that you can be a gunner's mate and deal with guns all day and shoot all the time and shoot every gun and blah blah and then you sign that paper and find out that gunner's mates do nothing but clean guns and fix them.
