A word about the SOCOM series
I for one have been an avid socom player since the earliest days of SOCOM II. I started out like everyone, a noob. Gradually I got better and better, earned my wings on S2 and was apart of many clans before finding a home in our very own forum's clan which was then called [S-2]. Our clan basically was the epitomy of ownage with myself, otter, and others dominating almost every war we played in. To get to the point, I was fackin good at that game. This site's clan named me the most clutch player on S2 which imo is pretty special. I sold both Socom 3 and Combined Assault the other day and decided to play a little bit of Socom 2 tonight. I was thinking as the game loaded, "I sucked pretty hard at Socom 3 and also CA...I wonder if I can still play this game?" Turns out, after several games of domination (one game I even went 21-6) I realized that I hadn't lost any skill whatsoever. I was playing like I did back in the day.
The question I have for everyone here is, why is it that someone, like myself, could be good at Socom 2 but be terrible at S3 and CA? What makes those games so different? I'd love some ideas...please, post your thoughts on the subject.

Well it could just be a mindset. What I mean by that is you were so used to S2 and how it played, felt, and looked that once you got on S3 you were like wtc is this? It looks different, plays different, and even feels different...trust me I know what you mean I've played S2 after playing S3/CA and it felt like home. Like I said it could just be that S3/CA just is soooooo much different than S2 and S2 does kinda feel better than S3/CA. IDK just an idea.

The gameplay and style possibly? We all know that S2 is notorious for the "dolphin dive" and the constant jumping around with M14s and M16s. SOCOM 2 has been out much longer and also we (or some) have been playing it longer because of this. I, myself, have been playing SOCOM 2 since it came out and that has been, what...3 years? Both S3 and CA don't allow you to do the "dolphin dive" and the sniper diving or the old school quick sniping. Plus the player movements on S2 are much easier to handle and help to get kills or dodge bullets. I can't count how many times I got sniped in S3 because I couldn't jump and hop around like I would be able to in S2 and not get sniped (or just not as soon). That's why I prefer SOCOM 2 over the other ones because it's a bit more difficult to kill people and get kills. It makes it more entertaining and a better goal for becoming better at it.
Sorry for the semi-long post.

Yea. i totally i agree. I was good at Socom2 and im really good at Socom3. I'm in the top 3 of the team nearly every game. But socom2 and socom3 are so differant. I think you cant dominate socom3 and win games by yourself like you could on 2. Sure you can have a few really good rounds, but you cant win 6 rounds by yourself. It seemed in 2 you could dodge so much stuff. You could do that dolphin dive crap and just dominate people who werent as good. Being a sniper was so much easier. Maps werent complex and you could run around doing the same thing every map and get countless kills. 3 you need team work and differant maps called for differant stratagy. Im just rambling on, but Socom 2 seemed much more easier.

Right before CA came out, I went back to S2 for a few days. My first game, I went 15-3. Then I figured out why. In S2, it is easy to hold down a spot. Not only can people not do the run/throw grenade thing to get that extra distance, but there are only a handful of ways to approach a sniper w/o getting killed. Plus another big thing is most guns have crappy scopes in S2. I grabbed a M4 on round, not realizing that I would only have a 4X scope on it.
Someone else touched on it, but the basic reason you can rock at S2 and not so much in S3 or CA is because S3 requires more help from your team, as most people cannot get 4 or 5 kills around in the newer games.

This is so true. I never was of the team-oriented mindset in Socom 2. Sure I loved to war with my clan, but I don't think I ever even tried to organize a game plan that had the team working as a whole...it just wasn't neccessary in that game.

You must have been one of the guys that stunk at S2. If you played for more than a week you knew how to get around laggers and glitchers. They were never a problem for me.

To me Socom died when socom 3 and socom:ca came out. they are TOO BIG....... i know some will disagree but what made socom 2 so great was the limited players (16). sure the thought of more players and more friends on one side sounded cool at first but if you really sit back and look at how it turned out it didnt work well in my opinion. its so hard to carry on conversations, you get sickly bored after dying and waiting for the next round to start and the boards albeit cool being big and with use of vehicles becomes overwhelming when theres only a few players left alive. in thought and on paper socom 3 and socom:ca are bad *** games but in reality and after playing them they DONT have that special something to really keep you in or wanting to play for hours. the magic is gone for now till zipper realizes 16 players really was the shyt or atleast if you make it bigger no more than 18 (9 on each side) and make the boards about the size of blizzard or a little bigger. they had a gem with socom 2 and only needed to alter or add a lil bit....not change the whole dynamics of the game and series!
I still hop on socom 2 at a friends house from time to time and it STILL sucks me in and makes me smile and get giddy with anticipation .....when ive tried playing socom 3 and socom:ca after 15 min or so i feel bored and not as involved. socom should be about closeness...tight nit teams etc like real life...not super size seal units etc.bigger IS NOT always better folks....REMEMBER THAT!!!!

Well, here's my answer:
I think the reason that you're better at SOCOM II than 3 and CA is because there was a big change from 2 to 3. In 3, the maps were larger, the rounds were more drawn out, and people could always be found camping. In 2, it was much more fast-paced gameplay. People still camped yes, but not as extremely as in 3. I guess what I'm getting at is the gameplay changed from 2 to 3 and that's the most logical reason why you're better at one than the other. You're just not accustomed to the style of play that's required for 3 and CA.
