Stealth: Silent but Deadly
One of the most underrated and unused tactic both online and off is stealth. You rarely see anyone sneaking up behind people or flanking the enemy without anyone noticing. Even on the seal team, you usually see people running across open spaces, gunning someone down and ultimately dying from a sniper or a smarter enemy who benefited from you giving your position away so eagerly. The most stealth you see is usually someone in a ghillie suit with a silenced assault rifle taking down enemies from well concealed bushes/grass ect. For the most part, that’s the most stealth you see online.
Stealth is probably the most important strategy in Socom. It is a game based upon a 4 man Navy SEAL team. A seal’s most valuable tactic is stealth. This applies to online play as well. Even if you’re a terrorist, when your enemy doesn’t know where your shooting him from, they can’t kill you. Also, if they don’t know you’re there because you’ve sneaked your way around them you can easily eliminate them from behind.
I put together some general tactics that will help you maintain your stealth profile and eliminate more enemies without them even knowing your there. Here are some ideas on how to maintain your stealth:
-Use a silencer!
Using a suppressed weapon is probably the most basic tactic to stealth. When they can’t hear you, you can stay concealed behind or in cover, and therefore maintain relatively safe. An enemy that doesn’t know wheres he’s being attacked from wont be able to kill you, and will end up being disorientated and end up being easier to kill. When you use a non suppressed weapon and enter a firefight, the discharge is heard over relatively all the map. These days, everybody’s looking for the fight so they can get that one more kill. Once you start firing the enemies snipers are drawn to your position and you will probably get sniped. The majority of enemies in the area will be drawn to the fire and you’ll probably end up being forced into a firefight where you're outnumbered, outgunned, and probably wont win.
-Use Cover
You usually see people blatantly running into open spaces, usually unaware that multiple enemies are waiting for them or even already starting to shoot at them. The majority of people who are sniped are rushers who don’t use cover effectively. Go slow, but not too slow. Keep moving at a good pace but always peek around corners and stop behind cover if your forced to go out into more open spaces. Stick to walls so that you’re a harder target to identify and your not as noticeable against the wall. After killing someone in a firefight, you should jump behind cover or lie down in the tall grass to recover yourself and reload. Chances are someone saw you and when you disappear they will become confused and afraid you’ve gotten behind them and that they’re compromised. Then they get worried, and have to cover two different ways, in front AND behind. This way you can take them by surprise.
-Survey your Surroundings
As you move through cover make sure to look around corners and scope out sniper positions and the area around you. This way, you can detect hiding enemies or ones in the open that you can easily pick off from your safe position. By doing this, you know that you can advance in relative safety and you know your surrounding position.
-Communicate with your team
Communicate as much as possible so you can be aware of possible threats in your area. Also, inform your teams snipers of any enemies you didn't finish of or were thought to be too much threat. The more you communicate the more aware you will be and the more of an advantage you have over the enemy.
-Kill Quietly and Quickly
The faster your eliminate and enemy the less time they have to communicate to their team where you are. Also, if you can eliminate an enemy without them firing, all their buddies know is that they died, not where, because they never fired a shot and hopefully you have a suppressed weapon.
-Flank maneuvers
Use smoke and flash bangs to attract attention to a different part of the map, free you up to move and flank the enemy and take them out from behind. By creating a fake smoke screen you will attract snipers attention, thinking the smoke is hiding movement, while really, your moving in a different part. They’ll be scoped in on the smoke or area where the flash bangs came, and not looking at you. If you engage an enemy you can’t eliminate or come across claymores or mines, don’t try to clear them, try another route to flank the enemy and take them by surprise. Avoid the large firefights where you are exposed and avoid highly trafficked paths where you will be forced to fight on equal terms. Try to gain an edge by using stealth and eliminate enemies without them knowing.
-Play Smart
Don't run out into the open and start firing at a sniper you saw firing at someone. Stick to cover and wait him out or try to outflank him. In other words, use your brain. If you see a group of enemies you think is too big for you to take down yourself, let your team know where they are, then wait for them to pass and if your confident enough you can harrass the back of the group. Try to avoid situations where you will expose yourself to the enemies snipers or campers, so stick to cover and advance with caution. Try not to engage enemies that will reveal your position when you start firing.
Note: A lot of these strategies don't always work in every situation. If you're playing in an urban map like Citadel don't worry about stealth, as their's little cover that you can conceal yourself behind, it's really just who has the better tactics in a cityfight. Only use total stealth when you know there isnt a lot of chance that you'll engage multiple enemies or snipers, as with a silenced weapon it decreases accuracy and range and lessens your chances of winning against an all out rusher.
All of these have been used effectively by myself. I hope it helps everyone be more stealthy an d bring back the true essence of the game. Thanks for all comments/add ons
