I think it would be pretty cool if your rank in single player effected your rank online. But it cant because all the cheaters and lazy little punks out there would just be trading save files of a fully completed game to get a "leg up" and the whole rank up issue would have another dimension to it so that whole thing may be better left alone. I bet something like that would work with that co-op socom game, Combined Assault, but who knows if they'll be ambitious enough to pull it off.
I remember, though, that the rankings in Socom 2 were a little weird as well. It all depended on who you were playing against and who killed who and all that stuff. And with the clicking noises when someone killed someone else, remember that? I can also recall having stats that didn't change/update in that game to, like the hit % and stuff. It had its share of problems, though not as bad as S3. If they could just resolve the disconnect issue and not "loose" stats, we'd be fine. Stats and ranking would actually start to matter, and people wouldn't be screwing around so much ruining it for everyone else.
But, for now, socom3 is just a random, respawn frag-fest with no real depth of any kind. The potential is there, but unfortunately the poor nature of some players influence the developers to concentrate more on preventing cheating, glitching, etc. And therefore we need to deal with stats that record disconnects/quits, and verifications, and DNAS errors, and etc., etc....
